CIGARETTES AND SWING-OUT.
Swing-out is one of Michigan's most
impressive ceremonies. Here it is that
the di nified senior can show his dig-
nity and seriousness, and not be laugh-
ed at. Hlere it is, that the campus
wants to see dignity, decorum and pro-
priety.
Everytbing has been planned in this
tradition to~ add to the impressiveness
of the occaZsion. The black gowns, the
long, slowl y advancing processional,
the invocation by Prof essor-itmeritus
D'Ooge abed the speeches by President-
Emeritus Angell and President Hutch-
ins, are all evidences of this. And it is
as it should be.
A cigarette has no place in such
company.
WHAT DOES TOMORROW HOLD?
Today, one thousand. Michigan sen-,
iors will encircle the campus; they
will swing-out of this academic, theo-
retical atmosphere into an "outer and
more practical world." Six weeks
remain before the final severing of
undergraduate ties, but the (unwel-
(ome?) machinery is already a present
working force.
Tomorrow? But, why guess, why
worry? Wha if the "huge world of
business" is ahead? Many and
many thousands have gone out,
no better prepared than you
and many many millions have had
no swing-ou t. The patriotism and cit-
izenshi p of the university graduate
is clearer, purer and as sincere, as is
the patriotism of wvorldly men, who
have achieved success in the past?
What more could you want? The bal-
ance is in your favor.
If yesterday and today, have been
worth while, what needlis there to fret
about tomorrow?

On Swing Out Dlay
The senior dons his cap and gown,
Of learning he's a type.
He strolls through campus walk and
town,
-And smokes a smelly pipe!
In black he strolls our campus fair,
For sweeping bows, he's surely ripe.
He "burlieques" his haughty air,
-By sucking at a pipe!
The senior's quite a personage,
A czar and king, you bet.
He thinks he's reached that sang froid
age
-And smokes a cigarette!
He sets the mode for '17,
And thinks he's only on the level;
Instead of staid and solemn mien,
He goes into the swing out pulling at
a 3B, a calabash or a Fatima and
thinks he's quite a dlevil!

Our , id-S ummier Minstrels
Mr. Johnsing: Mistah Bones, can you
tell me why the color of the caps and
gowns on the campus today is so
much like a gathering from the four
corners of the earth?
Mr. Bones: Mr. Johnsing, your pro-
fundity obfusciates me, and I am
speechless. Pray tell us the answer
to your conundrum.
Mr. Johnsing : Well, the color of the
caps and gowns can be likened to a
gathering from the four corners of the
earth insomuch as they can both be
termed conventional. Har, har! Intro-
ducing our famous Cution quartette,
Ella, Prossie, Electro, and Exie, in
their daring bicycle ride about the
edge of a soda water straw. Are you
ready, gentlemen? Poco a poco rit,
Profess.
