Keep your studies on the defensive,
never allow them to be bigger than
you are.
Alsoeach February several fresh-
men, who have failed to make good
scholastically, are requested to leave!
the university. You cannot afford to
be in this division, it hurts you and
it hurts Michigan. Stop making good
resolutions and make good.
ORGANIZATION OF ADVISORY
SYSTEM NEARLY COMPLETED
Large Number of Literary Seniors
Have Been Assigned as Advisors
For Freshmen.
With more than 100 literary seniors
enrolled as advisors and with five or
six freshmen assigned to each, the
organization of the advisory system is
fast being completed. Many of the
seniors have already met some of
their advisees, and all the notices will
be out by the end of the week.
"So far the system looks as though
it would work out witht great success,"
said Karl B. Hoch, chairman of the
senior comimttee. "If the seniors will
do their part by calling on their
freshmen as soon as possible, and in
good faith and sincerity answer any
questions which the younger men may
ask; and if the freshmen in turn, will
receive the advisor as a friend and ac-
cept his advice in the spirit in which it
is given, there can be no doubt about
its success."
Plans are being made to hold a
smoker within a week or two so that
the freshmen may all meet one anoth-
er as well as the seniors to whom they
have been assigned.

NOTICE OUR SPECIALTY
MICHIGAN PRAYER.
Michigan mourns and hopes;mourns
for the suffering, that has stricken her
"Grand Old Man," hopes for a miracu-
lous recovery that seems too doubtful.
The university opening, -otherwise
unusually auspicious, is saddened by
the critical illness that has been vis-
ited upon Dr. James B. Angell, Pres-
ident-Emeritus. It is difficult to go
about everyday duties, knowing that
the man who has done so much for
Michigan and humanity is in grave
danger.
His friends are legion. They anx-
iously hope for encouraging bulletins.
We of Michigan, his chosen people,
fervently pray that he may yet be with
us.
HOW!
Freshmen, you are welcome at
Michigan. We give you the boards to-
day because your coming to Michigan
is largely a circumstance. The rest
of us have returned as a matter of
course but chance has played an im-
portant part in your coming. Beyond
all else you are welcome, that you felt
when you stepped off the train, dur-
ing your search for rooms and even in
your registration difficulties.
Beyond you lies nine months of ex-
perience, each day of which offers ;you
the opoprtunity to make Michigan a
more positive institution.
How positively are you charged?
If you discover that yoi have a wish-
bone where your backbone ought to
be, wire for it at once or you will be
lost in the melting pot of man making.
Lincoln said, "I am for the man who
works-" And so is Michigan.
Immediately you will be amazed at
the large number of "college activ-
ities." At once we call your attention
to the fact that your scholastic stand-
ing of the first year makes or breaks
your chances of participating in any
of these activities as sophomores.
