Dignity in individuals is not rare but
in university students it is the excep-
tion. The convocaton of yesterday
taught Michigan a new lesson, the sig-
nificance and dignity of the university
group.
In the older schools, particularly of
Europe, the solemn responsibility of
belonging to a great university is con-
tinually impressed upon the students.
Oxford undergraduates are always
seen in gowns which represent their
connection with the traditions and
achievements of a glorious past. But
in Michigan and other schools the
group spirit has been put to more bois-
terous uses. Howling athletic mass
meetings and screaming snake-dances
have been for many years the chief
manifestation of our group spirit.
So we thank the Convocation for
bringing us back to a sense of our own
dignity. Today we realize as never be-
fore the sublimity and grandeur of our
Alma Mater.
