work seems to have been done on the
bias and the grade is now down and
assists a person to fall.
But this is not the worst feature.
Instead of shoveling off the snow and
ice and keeping the exits clean, the
janitors have scarcely touched the va-
rious steps. We appreciate their un-
wonted efforts in cleaning the campus
walks, but we do think that the health
and safety of the student body and the
faculty deserves closer attention than
it has received in the past. If the jan-
itor force is physically incapable of
performing the task, there ought to
be enough students willing to take a
hand and remove the ice and hardened
snow. A little salt or sand judiciously
applied, would do much.

We Retain Mr. Friday.
It is with no small measure of joy
that The Daily learns of Dr. David
Friday's decision to remain at Mich-
igan in the face of a flattering offer
from the University of Texas. Al-
though a young man, Dr. Friday al-
ready enjoys more than an ordinary
reputation among his colleagues in

Clean the Steps.
Slippery sidewalks are always a
menace to pedestrians but slippery
and slanting steps are even more dan-
gerous. For several years The Daily
has repeatedly brought this fact be-
fore the attention of the student body
and the faculty. Accidents of a more
or less serious nature have been the
1 result of allowing this condition to
6 continue and we believe that the time
has come when it should be remedied.
Just before examinations started a
5 young lady slipped upon West Hall
a steps and this accident finally made it
necessary for her to undergo an oper-
ation. Such an affair is deplorable,
and the cause should be removed, even
if the result should call for extra ex-
penditure.' The safety of the student
body is all important. Last fall a few
changes were made to remedy the
worst steps.- Those of Tappan MIall
and the Library were chipped out. In-
stead of making them safer, this has
keenest and most briliant minds, in
his department, and is recognized as
one of its ablest members. Withal he
posesses to a very marked degree the
democratic ideal of which Michigan is
so justly proud. This is exemplified
in his classes and off the campus. A
student never feels more at his ease
than when discussing some knotty
proposition with Dr. Friday, and Mich-
igan would have suffered greatly had
he resigned.
Arthur G. Cohen.
With the departure for other fields
of Arthur G. Cohen, Michigan lost its
most versatile and clever actor. The
Comedy club and operas have produc-
ed men of more or less ability in his-
trionic ways, but of these Cohen prob-
ably deserves more credit. It is hard
for a man to work his way through
college, keep up his work and at the
same time devote a great deal of time
to campus activities. Yet all this Co-
hen managed to do. Although at
Michigan scarcely two years, there
was no one more imbued with Michi-
gan ideals and no one who did any
more for the university in the same
space of time. Hard working, honest,
and conscientious, Cohen is bound to
make good in any line of endeavor.
Had a little more encouragement been
offered him in certain quarters, he
might still be among us. He is not,
however, and we wish him all the pos-
sible luck in any field in which he
may find himself.
Donald Haines Attempts the Novel.
Donald H. Haines, '09, contributor to
Collier's, Everybody's, Scribner's, and
the American magazines, has forsaken
the realm of short story, and his maid-'
en attempt at the longer form of lit-
erature, "The Return of Pierre," is
fresh from the hands of the publishers.
The story deals with a French boy
in Paris at the time of the Franco-
Prussian war and is illustrated by
genuine Detaille pictures.
Shaw Now on Road to Recovery.
Frank Shaw, '12 L, who was oper-
ated on at the homeopathic hospital
yesterday afternoon, is resting easily
and it is hoped that he will be able to
leave the hospital in a few weeks.
