Ever since the Mticitigan hockey
teamt concluded the 1099-2000 season
with a quarterfinal loss to Maine itt
thte NC'AA Tournatnent, fans tave
pointed towards the upeottting year as
a possible ehampionsitip season for
the Wolvetines.
It was assumed thtat last season's
talented but youthful squad would
return most of its' key players.
But, the Wolverines' visions of
grandeur might take a huge hit, with
the news that junior forward Mike
Comrie - who w'as a Hobey Baker
Aw\ard finalist last year-- is consider-
ing leasing school early to play major
.junior hockey. If C'ontrie does lease,
the Edmonton Ofilers - who drafted
C'omrie - would hate a year to sigtn
him, after which time C'ontie woutld
become a free agent.
"I'tm disappointed lito's considerintg
it," Michtigan coach Red Beressnt
sattd. "I tatenot talked to htitayet, so I
dontIkntow how he's feeltnt" But
stnce thte Van Ryn dectsion, a ltt of
planers realize it's an option.
Dcrentson is referring to thte sat"a of
Mike \Van Ryn, a formet Mtictt"gtt
defettscttan who left school last stttt
tmer to play junior hockey. VttnRytt
was ttotivated by a destre to get awsay
fromtttthe New Jersey Devilsswho
hate a history of underpaytit" dtaft
ticks.
The strategy paid off for Vatn Ryntt
whto becamt'e a free agent and sigttcd
with the St. Louis Blues for thte mtaxt -"
tttun allowable amount, but Derensont
isn't consineed that Van Ryn Woutld
recotmtend a similar path for Cottnie.
"I know' Contrte talked to Vatt Rtt,
attd Itm pretty certain Vatt Ryn wtould
tell tim not to do it," Berentsott sabi
"Cottrie twas drafted by his htottetotwn
teamn, swhich also owns the rights to his
brothter. It doesn't make sense."
