Basketball t)perations Bob Zuffelato
said.
Taj McDavid and Korleone Young
are good examples of entering the
NBA before being ready. McDavid
was left undrafted in 1996 and
ruined his chances at playing college
basketball.
Young was a bit more esuccessful
- he was drafted by the Detroit
Pistons in the 2nd routid of the 1998
draft - but was released before he
could make an impact for the team,
The answer to both of these prob-
lems may be a developmental minor
league System for the NBA.
"1 think (a developmental league)
couldhe good for high nchool kids
who can't italic the grade," said
Miller after being drafted by the
Orlando Magic.
"You don't want to see them not
go to college and not play basket-
ball."
A minor league could be the
answer for players like Young and
McDavid, who were not cut out for

college, as well as for Arceneaux.
"I think (a developmental league)
would be good for players that feel
college isn't for them," said former
Wolverine Jamal Crawford. "College
isn't for everybody."
There are other basketball leagues -
- the Continental Baskethali
Association, United States
Basketball League and International
Basketball League - but none have
a relationship with the NBA.
Isiah Thomas tried to make the
CBA an NBA minor league, but
without much success so far -and
with Thomas negotiating the sale of
the league it remains likely that he
won't.
David Stern has talked about an
NBA minor league forming in
November 2001, but would likely
include an age limit.
This pleases the NCAA but again
leaves high school players in the
cold. For now, young players are left
with choosing a situation that they
feel is right for them.
"A lot of us have played agaittst
(NBA players) already, so we think
we are ready to make the jump,"
Crawford said.
Whether they are ready or not
remains to be seen, but until NBA ,
has a structured system, players will
continue to make the jump - with-
out a safety net.
