The Michigan men's tennis team
will not be going to the NCAA finals
this year. The Wolverines were elimi-
nated in the semifinals of the NCAA
egion IV Championships by Missis-
sippi.
The fourth seeded Wolverines (11-2
Big Ten, 17-9 overall) were defeated by
the Rebels (16-6 overall), 4-1, Saturday.
Michigan earned only one singles
win. Junior John Costanzo defeated
Mississippi's Johan Hede, 6-0, 6-2, at
No. 2 singles. Hede is ranked 23rd in
the nation according to the May I
Rolex Collegiate Rankings.
He is one of three Rebels - along
ith Mahesh Bhupathi (No. 3) and Ali
Hamadeh (No. 57) - to be ranked
among the top 60 players. Michigan's
only ranked player is junior Peter
Pusztai (No. 73).
Mississippi is ranked eighth in the
nation. Michigan is 25th.

gan coach Brian Eisner said. "We felt

win."
Mississippi coach Billy Chadwick
had similar thoughts. "We knew it was
going to be close today," he said.
"They (Michigan) played alot better
today than yesterday. We were very
fortunate to win."
To advance to the semifinals, the
Wolverines had to defeat another Big
Ten team - Northwestern. This was
the third time this season that the two
teams faced each other.
Although Michigan did not play
with its normal intensity, the Wolver-
ines were able to come away with a 4-
2 victory over the Wildcats (14-11).
The team won two of the three
doubles matches on the way to earning
the doubles point. In addition Pusztai,
Geoff Prentice and Grady Burnett took
the first, fifth and sixth singles spots,
respectively.
"We didn't play well as a team (in
the first round). We showed a lot of
character though," said Pusztai, who
defeated Carl von Schantz, 6-4, 6-3.
Eisner echoed Pusztai's feelings.
"We played OK, but not great," he
said. "We did what we had to do to
win, but we did not play great. We
showed a lot of character today."
IN OTHER TENNIS NEWS: Michigan
sophomore Sarah Cyganiak will be
competing in the NCAA Division I
Women's Tennis Championships,
May 12-16, in Malibu, Calif.
Cyganiak has a 33-13 overall
record this year. She was also the 1995
Big Ten Player of the Year and an all-
conference selection. She is ranked
No. 61 in the nation by the Intercolle-
giate Tennis Association.
RODRIGUEZ
Continued from page 12
Rodriguez said he look particular
offense to the reference to his "face"
because he is Mexican American.
In September 1994, the University
conducted an investigation into the fir-
ing of
Rodriguez.
However, he
was out of
'town when
the hearing
was an-
nounced and
7 - .was unable
to attend.
In a later
> Ann Arbor
Roberson News article,
Roberson
was quoted as saying he would rein-
state Rodriguez if he found that his
comment was the only reason for
Rodriguez's termination.
Because Rodriguez was not rein-
stated after this remark and other state-
ments by the University, Rodriguez
claims that he had been defamed, and
portrayed in a false light. He is assert-
ing these claims along with seeking $1
million in damages in his lawsuit filed
in the U.S. district court against the
University.
Rodriguez is 70 years old, and his
firing from University is the first time
he has ever been asked to leave his job.
"There is some desparity in this
case and the way the University
handles these types of cases. Joe
(Rodriguez) was especially hurt and
upset by these allegations, and this has
been a huge blow to his personal self-
esteem," Faupel said.
Faupel referred to the case involv-
ing former Michigan football coach
Gary Moeller as an example where
Roberson was quick to support a
former employee, while he did not
support Rodriguez.
