RODRIGUEZ Continued from page 12 Rodriguez said he look particular offense to the reference to his "face" because he is Mexican American. In September 1994, the University conducted an investigation into the fir- ing of Rodriguez. However, he was out of 'town when the hearing was an- nounced and 7 - .was unable to attend. In a later > Ann Arbor Roberson News article, Roberson was quoted as saying he would rein- state Rodriguez if he found that his comment was the only reason for Rodriguez's termination. Because Rodriguez was not rein- stated after this remark and other state- ments by the University, Rodriguez claims that he had been defamed, and portrayed in a false light. He is assert- ing these claims along with seeking $1 million in damages in his lawsuit filed in the U.S. district court against the University. Rodriguez is 70 years old, and his firing from University is the first time he has ever been asked to leave his job. "There is some desparity in this case and the way the University handles these types of cases. Joe (Rodriguez) was especially hurt and upset by these allegations, and this has been a huge blow to his personal self- esteem," Faupel said. Faupel referred to the case involv- ing former Michigan football coach Gary Moeller as an example where Roberson was quick to support a former employee, while he did not support Rodriguez.
