and pinchrunner Erin Martino on sec-
ond, Carr hit a long fly ball to
rightfield to advance the runner to
third.
Second baseman Jessica Lang was
then walked intentionally after reach-
ing a full count.
But Smith popped out to
centerfield to end the Wolverines'
eight game winning streak. Earlier in
the season Michigan went 19 straight
games without a loss.
The Wolverines' big guns at the
plate were Kellyn Tate and Kovach,
who went 3-for-3 and 2-for-4, respec-
tively. Tate is filling in for senior Lesa
Arvia, who broke her leg against Penn
State in early April.
Game two went a little more
smoothly for Michigan. The game re-

mained scoreless until the third inning
when Northwestern's Beverly
Stiglbauer knocked an RBI single to
leftfield.
Lang answered in the bottom half
of the inning with a solo home run over
the leftfield fence.
With the score knotted at two in the
seventh, Pearcy led off with a single
and Griffin followed with another
single to leftfield. Kovach slapped a
double into the gap in right-centerfield.
Pearcy and Griffin both crossed the
plate before Northwestern could get
the ball into the infield.
Kovach grabbed the win for the
Wolverines. Shortstop Kathryn
Gleason was 3-for-4 at the plate for
Michigan.
After the fireworks of Saturday's
doubleheader, rain and subdued play
saturated Sunday's games. Once again,
the Wolverines came out flat and
handed Northwestern another first-
game victory.
Griffin took the loss, 1-0, in a battle
of the defenses. Both teams were
scoreless until the top of the sixth in-
ning when Stiglbauer singled and then
scored off a hit over the bag at second
by Green for the only nu of the game.
Against Central Michigatn April 19,
Michigan swept a doubleheader, 6-0
and 5-1.
Kovach fanned five Chippewas and
allowed just three hits in game one.
Kelly Holmes (9-1) picked up the vic-
tory in the nightcap.
Cheryl Pearcy was 4-for-8 at the
plate for Michigan.
The Wolverines head to Columbus
Wednesday for a weekday match with
Ohio State before facing Michigan
State in two doubleheaders this week-
end.

After a weekend split with Minnesota, Michigan, who was picked to finish second in the Big Ten, still owns the bottom
spot in the conference standings with a 8-10 league record.
