Earlier in the season Michigan went 19 straight games without a loss. The Wolverines' big guns at the plate were Kellyn Tate and Kovach, who went 3-for-3 and 2-for-4, respec- tively. Tate is filling in for senior Lesa Arvia, who broke her leg against Penn State in early April. Game two went a little more smoothly for Michigan. The game re- mained scoreless until the third inning when Northwestern's Beverly Stiglbauer knocked an RBI single to leftfield. Lang answered in the bottom half of the inning with a solo home run over the leftfield fence. With the score knotted at two in the seventh, Pearcy led off with a single and Griffin followed with another single to leftfield. Kovach slapped a double into the gap in right-centerfield. Pearcy and Griffin both crossed the plate before Northwestern could get the ball into the infield. Kovach grabbed the win for the Wolverines. Shortstop Kathryn Gleason was 3-for-4 at the plate for Michigan. After the fireworks of Saturday's doubleheader, rain and subdued play saturated Sunday's games. Once again, the Wolverines came out flat and handed Northwestern another first- game victory. Griffin took the loss, 1-0, in a battle of the defenses. Both teams were scoreless until the top of the sixth in- ning when Stiglbauer singled and then scored off a hit over the bag at second by Green for the only nu of the game. Against Central Michigatn April 19, Michigan swept a doubleheader, 6-0 and 5-1. Kovach fanned five Chippewas and allowed just three hits in game one. Kelly Holmes (9-1) picked up the vic- tory in the nightcap. Cheryl Pearcy was 4-for-8 at the plate for Michigan. The Wolverines head to Columbus Wednesday for a weekday match with Ohio State before facing Michigan State in two doubleheaders this week- end. After a weekend split with Minnesota, Michigan, who was picked to finish second in the Big Ten, still owns the bottom spot in the conference standings with a 8-10 league record. The Wolverines tied the game at four when shortstop Ryan Van Oeveren led off the top of the seventh with a solo homerun. Van Oeveren finished with a 3-4 perfor- mance. Michigan swept two games f'om Siena Heights last Tuesday. The Wolverines won both games in the bottom of the seventh, 7- 5, in the opener and 8-7 in the nightcap. Arvai eamed both wins in relief. Michigan trailed 5-2 with one outiin the bottom of the seventh in game one. Then, five straightWolverines got hits and all five eventually crossed the plate. In the second game, the Wolvennes trailed 7-5 in the bottom of the sixth, but tied it on a two-run triple by Goble.
