New group hopes to unite campus women's organizations

By Kiran Srinivas
DAILY STAFF REPORTER
A new student group hopes to lead women's
organizations at the University into the future.
LSA senior Kendra Huard created the Michi-
gan Women's Issues Network(MWIN)last year.
Huard said she came up with the idea while in
class.
"One day in class, I realized the University
doesnothave anumbrellaorganization for women.
That night I decided to write a proposal to start
sucltan organization," Huard said.
"Our main focus is to build a network on
campus between all groups which have concerns
dealing with women. ... We want to be a catalyst
for opening doors," Huard said. "Our objective is
to keep everyone happy."
Mona Kumar, a member of MWIN's core
group, said the goal of the organization is to unite

all the women's resources at the University. "We
want to be a networking agency which funnels
information to women's groups," she said.
Kumar said she has been overwhelmed by all
the support, from students to administrators, that
MWIN has received. She said she hopes the
network will be a place where incoming students
will be able to learn about opportunities at the
University.
MWIN - which has not yet founda place to
call home - would love to have its headquarters

in the Michigan League. The Michigan League
was founded in 1929 as the University's student
union for women, the counterpart to the Michigan
Union, which was then the men's student union.
"Considering the historical role (of the
League), I think the League would be agreat place
for MWIN to be located," said Abby Stewart,
director of women's studies.
KumarsaidtheLeaguestartedout"for women,
by women." She said it's possible that a section of
the League would revert to a women's arena.

Director of the Michigan League Bob Yackf'

the League. "At the League we are looking to once
again be a critical part of student life," he said.
When asked whether he thinks MWIN is
trying to turnback the clock, Yacke said, "Iwould
not look at MWIN and say, 'Oh no, we are going
back 65 years and starting over again.' I think this
can be a win-win situation. I don't see MWIN
with a hidden agenda."
LSA senior Curt Steiner said he is unsuro
whether the University "really needs to have
another organization." He said he is unaware of
any serious disadvantages that women face at the
University.
But Steiner said if MWIN does work on
constructive measures, such as equalizing pay
between men and women in the work force, then
having it would be a good idea.
