capture first ever Big Ten title

EAST LANSING - The chang-
ing of the guard occurred lastweekend
for the Michigan men's track team.
The seniors strode through their final
Big Tenchampionshipmeet, whilethe
freshman also shone.
Even so, Michigan could only look-
onaswinnerOhioStatescoredinevent
after event at Ralph Young Track in
East Lansing.
The 61 points earned by the Wol-
verines merited a seventh place finish,
81.5 points behind the Buckeyes.
The top Michigan senior was Matt
Smith, who finished third in the 3000-
meter steeplechase and sixth in the
5000 run.
Representing the freshmen was
Scott MacDonald, reigning Big Ten
Indoor Freshman of the Year. Histhird
place finish in the 1500 run anddhis
fourth in the 800 rim was a step down
from his indoor mile victory, but he
seemed pleased with his first outdoor
Big Ten Championship meet.
"I have non complaints; the races

were really intense,"MacDonald said.
The high point of the meet for the
Wolverines was freshman Sean
Clancy's second-place finish in the
decathalon.Clancywonallthreethrow-
ing events on his way to a total score of
7,126 points.
