Students file suit against 'U,
for withholding information

Two students have filed suit against
the University for allegedly not expe-
diting Freedom of Information Act re-
quests.
According to the Michigan Free-
dom of Information Act, public bodies
must release every document within
five days of its request date - with
limited exceptions.
LSA senior ToddOchoaand former
graduate student Jeff Hinte filed their
first Freedom of Information requests
September 23, 1991. They requested
documents regarding the deputization
of the campus police force.
Ochoasaid the University filled their
firstrequest with all thepertinent docu-
ments, but denied or denied in part later
requests.

Bob Schwarzwalder, the coordina-
tor of information services for Basic
Sciencesand EngineeringLibrary,said
the library will remain open until the
first day of Spring term finals.
The move will start June 29 and
Schwarzwalder expects the new loca-
tion to open by July 8 or July 10.
Schwarzwalder said relocating the li-
brary at this time would inconvenience
the least amount of students.
The space available in the UGLI
will be used to house the Physics Li-
brary.
Dan Van Loon,an LSA senior who
has been workingatthelibraryfor three
years, said that several thousand older
and less frequently used books had al-
ready been moved to Buhr Library in
ordertofacilitatemovingthelargequan-
tity of books.
Schwarzwalder said weeding the
collectionpriortothemovemadesense
since 10 percentof the library's collec-
tion accounts for 70 to 75 percent of
library circulation.
Thenewlocation willutilizea"com-
pact shelving" system, where back to
back shelves will slide on rails in order
to provide more space for books,
Schwarzwalder said.
An official opening ceremony for
the new library is planned for early
July.
