Low state allocation may lead to higher tuition

Council begins competition for LSA course ideas
(continued from Page 1)
Academic Affairs and Provost
James Duderstadt said the delay was
caused by an unexpectedly large
number of proposals.
According to Duderstadt, many
of the 150 proposals originally
submitted to the competition in
April were combined, and several
- including a renovation of the
arena stage in the Frieze Building
- were funded through other
sources in the University budget.
Although Duderstadt has
announced the "winners" in the
competition for funding, the final
allocation for each proposal has not
been determined.
"We are still negotiating in most
cases with the individuals who
submitted the proposals," he said.
The approved programs will not
automatically receive the funding
level requested.
Duderstadt added that he was
"pleasantly surprised" at the
proposals. "For the first time, the
proposals were quite good,"
Duderstadt said. The Office of
Academic Affairs will conduct a
second competition for $1 million
to improve undergraduate life next
fall.
The LSA Collegiate Council, a
group of LSA administrators and
faculty members, received $220,000
from the initiative to create new
courses and improve current ones.
The council has created a smaller
scale competition for funding
within the college.
The council solicited program
ideas from all LSA faculty mem-
bers. The proposals are intended to
enhance the "critical thinking com-
ponent" of the curriculum and
involve students more actively in
the classroom.
"(The program) is needed to give
our undergraduate curriculum coher-
ence and to pursue more effectively
the goals of a liberal education,"
said LSA Dean for Curriculum and
Long Range Planning Jack
Meiland. He said that several
courses have already been approved.
The Collegiate Council may
also finance several new LSA
courses that were already approved
for funding through the Initiative.
