Here are some facts from
our doctor's corner about mental
health that may surprise you.

percent of all social security dis-
ability days spent in the hospital,
second only to cardiovascular dis-
ease (27 percent).
.Many great and influential people
throughout history suffered from
some type of mental disorder. For
example, statesmen Abraham Lin-
coln and Winston Churchill, com-
posers Handel and Tchaikovsky,
writers Edgar Allen Poe, F Scott
Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemmingway,
all suffered from manic depression.

Worksite Welntess
continued from page 7
wellness program is a very effective
prevention service.
"A total wellness program is ideal
because each employee starts with a
health risk appraisal and screenings
to identify existing or potential health
problems," she says. "For example,
we can then warn an executive who
works long days, eats poorly and
doesn't exercise that he may be on his
way to a heart attack."
Early screenings can also inden-
tify high risks which are common
among many employees in one or-
ganization so that cost-effective pre-
vention programs can be tailored to
fit the needs of that group.
Worksite programs offered
through Catherine McAuley Health

Center include Smoke Stoppers, Be
Trim!, Personal Stress Management
and The Back School. The many
screenings available include blood
cholesterol, hypertension, glaucoma
and sickle cell.
Dozens of area businesses have
taken advantage of these programs in-
cluding Ford Motor Company,
Thompson-Shore, Inc., Applied Dy-
namics International and Spring Ar-
bor Distributors. Jondle says
employers and employees have been
very pleased with the results of the
programs.
And when everyone's happy, who
won't be productive?
