ROZEMA, WINFIELD AT IT AGAIN
New York pummels Rucker, 6-4

By KATIE BLACKWELL
Special to the Daily
DETROIT - The New York Yankees
started the first inning in Tiger Stadium
last night taking batting practice. off
Tiger starter Dave Rucker, scoring five
runs in the process en route to a 6-4 vic-
tory.
Second baseman Willie Randolph
ripped a line-drive single and Ken Grif-
fey followed suit. Control problems
plagued Rucker as he gave Dave Win-
field a free trip to first base to load the
bases. Yankee cleanup and designated
hitter Don Baylor pounded the third
single of the game to score Randolph
Ex-Tiger Steve Kemp was hit by a pitch
and Griffey scored.
IT WAS clearly time for aTiger pit-
ching change. All five batters Rucker
faced scored. Dave Rozema was sent in
to try and save face for Detroit. But it
wasn't to be. Rozema's first con-
tribution was a balk, before throwing a

pitch, sending Winfield across home
plate. The Tiger reliever settled down
and retired the next three Yankees, but
not before Baylor and Kemp scored.
Rozema shut down the New York hit-
ting spree until the fourth inning, when
Jerry Mumphrey cracked his second
home run of the year just out of the
reach of Larry Herndon's glove in left
center. The Yankees took a 6-0 lead.
Detroit looked better in the fifth in-
ning when pitcher Juan Berenguer
opened the inning in relief of Rozema,
putting New York away one-two-three.
IN THE bottom of the fifth, third bas-
eman Tom Brookens put the Bengals on
the scoreboard with a solo blast to the
upper deck of left center.
Lance Parrish scored the Tigers'
second run following his towering
double to center field on an RBI single
by John Wockenfuss.
A final Tiger rally in the bottom of the
ninth, ignited by Glenn Wilson's third

single of the evening, left the Tigers two
runs short of the Yankees before Alan
Trammell flew out to Kemp to end the
game.
The game was sparked by fireworks
from Rozema and Winfield. The last
time the two players met, Winfield
charged Rozema when he was nearly
hit by a pitch. In his second at bat last
night, Winfield sent his bat sailing bet-
ween Rozema and Brookens into
shallow left field. Winfield's next time
at bat found him sprawling to the
ground after a Rozema brushback pit-
ch.
Orioles 1, White Sox 0
BALTIMORE (AP)-Dan Ford broke
up a no hit bid by Chicago's Richard
Dotson with a one out home run in the
eighth inning for Baltimore's only hit
last night and the Orioles defeated the
White Sox 1-0 behind the four hit pit-
ching of Storm Davis and Tippy Mar-
tinez.

Dotson, a 24-year-old right hander,
who bidding for the American League's
first no-hitter in six years until Ford
sliced an opposite field drive over the
right field fence, his third homer of the
season.
Mets 2, Padres I
NEW YORK (AP) - Darryl
Strawberry's run-scoring single in the
eighth inning lifted the New York Mets to
a 2-1 victory over the San Diego Padres
last night.
Strawberry, a 19-year-old rookie, also
had a single as he produced the game
winning hit for the second straight
night.
Mookie Wilson opened the eighth with
a single off Dave Dravecky, 6-2, who
was trying to become the first Natinal
League pitcher to win seven games this
season. Wilson moved to second on
Hubie Brooks' sacrifice and scored on
Strawberry's single to center.
