The Michigan Daily - Thursday, May 19, 1983 - page 17, ROZEMA, WINFIELD AT IT AGAIN New York pummels Rucker, 6-4 By KATIE BLACKWELL Special to the Daily DETROIT - The New York Yankees started the first inning in Tiger Stadium last night taking batting practice. off Tiger starter Dave Rucker, scoring five runs in the process en route to a 6-4 vic- tory. Second baseman Willie Randolph ripped a line-drive single and Ken Grif- fey followed suit. Control problems plagued Rucker as he gave Dave Win- field a free trip to first base to load the bases. Yankee cleanup and designated hitter Don Baylor pounded the third single of the game to score Randolph Ex-Tiger Steve Kemp was hit by a pitch and Griffey scored. IT WAS clearly time for aTiger pit- ching change. All five batters Rucker faced scored. Dave Rozema was sent in to try and save face for Detroit. But it wasn't to be. Rozema's first con- tribution was a balk, before throwing a pitch, sending Winfield across home plate. The Tiger reliever settled down and retired the next three Yankees, but not before Baylor and Kemp scored. Rozema shut down the New York hit- ting spree until the fourth inning, when Jerry Mumphrey cracked his second home run of the year just out of the reach of Larry Herndon's glove in left center. The Yankees took a 6-0 lead. Detroit looked better in the fifth in- ning when pitcher Juan Berenguer opened the inning in relief of Rozema, putting New York away one-two-three. IN THE bottom of the fifth, third bas- eman Tom Brookens put the Bengals on the scoreboard with a solo blast to the upper deck of left center. Lance Parrish scored the Tigers' second run following his towering double to center field on an RBI single by John Wockenfuss. A final Tiger rally in the bottom of the ninth, ignited by Glenn Wilson's third single of the evening, left the Tigers two runs short of the Yankees before Alan Trammell flew out to Kemp to end the game. The game was sparked by fireworks from Rozema and Winfield. The last time the two players met, Winfield charged Rozema when he was nearly hit by a pitch. In his second at bat last night, Winfield sent his bat sailing bet- ween Rozema and Brookens into shallow left field. Winfield's next time at bat found him sprawling to the ground after a Rozema brushback pit- ch. Orioles 1, White Sox 0 BALTIMORE (AP)-Dan Ford broke up a no hit bid by Chicago's Richard Dotson with a one out home run in the eighth inning for Baltimore's only hit last night and the Orioles defeated the White Sox 1-0 behind the four hit pit- ching of Storm Davis and Tippy Mar- tinez. Dotson, a 24-year-old right hander, who bidding for the American League's first no-hitter in six years until Ford sliced an opposite field drive over the right field fence, his third homer of the season. Mets 2, Padres I NEW YORK (AP) - Darryl Strawberry's run-scoring single in the eighth inning lifted the New York Mets to a 2-1 victory over the San Diego Padres last night. Strawberry, a 19-year-old rookie, also had a single as he produced the game winning hit for the second straight night. Mookie Wilson opened the eighth with a single off Dave Dravecky, 6-2, who was trying to become the first Natinal League pitcher to win seven games this season.
