Jacobson named baseball MVP

By PAUL HELGREN
It was the Jeff Jacobson show at the
Michigan Baseball Bust at the Ann Ar-
bor Marriott Inn last night.
The senior co-captain was honored
with three awards, the Ray Fisher
(MVP), the Ted Sizemore (best defen-
sive player), and a Fred Wilpon Senior
Award, which was also given to
Wolverine seniors Tim Karazim, Dan
Sygar, and Fred Erdmann.
THE CHOICES for best hitter and
best pitcher were definitely surprises -
that's because nobody won those awar-
ds. Coach Bud Middaugh said that with
so many players having outstanding
years it wold be best to wait until the
end of the year to decide who will be
honored.
Other award recipients were Fred
Erdmann with the Betty Simmons
award (most improved) and Dan Sygar
with the Wolverine Award (character
and team contribution).
Coach Middaugh also received an
award on behalf of Ann Arbor mayor
Lou Belcher. The handsome plaque was
a commemorationof Michigan baseball
week, which the mayor designated as
May 16-22 in recognition of the team's
fine performance this year.
Michigan alumnus Fred Wilpon,
currently president of the New York
Mets, was the featured speaker. Wilpon
praised the University's emphasis on
academics and criticized professional
baseball's poor record in "preparing
ballplayers for the real world."
Jacobson echoed Wilpon's sentiments
when he advised his younger team-
mates to "get that education." "Jake"
also was a hit with the banquet crowd
when he responded to Wilpon's inquiry

as to how many players were in the
Michigan team. "Nine," Athe second
baseman deadpanned.
Jim Schneider, who is assistant
sports information director, emceed
the event and also exchanged a few put
downs with the Wolverine players and
coaches.
