with the Brig Ten tracx cnampionsnips coming up,
Michigan coach Jack Harvey's squad went down to
Champaign last weekend to take on Illinois in its last
warmup before the conference meet. The Wolverines
came home victorious, 81-43, but the meet itself was
nondescript.
"The weather was not good, it (the meet) really
wag just a tuneup for the Big Ten's next weekend,"
said Harvey. "Other than Woolley, Erikson and Stin-
son, there wasn't much to it."
DAVE WOOLLEY set a new personal record in the
pole vault when he cleared 166". He appears to be
peaking at just the right time for the conference
meet.
Scott Erikson also appears to be peaking. With his
toss of 182'10" in the discus, he achieved the best
distance in the Big Ten this season and established
himself as the favorite going into the championship.
Derek Stinson was the third standout for the Blue
with three first places on the day. He won the 110 high

meter relay along with Derek Harper, Keith Bostic
and Todd Steverson. The time was 42.2.
This weekend the Wolverines travel to West
Lafayette for the Big Ten Championships.
Netters eliminated
The Michigan tennis team's season came to an end
last weekend when UCLA bounced the Wolverines
from the NCAA Championships in Athens, Ga., 5-2.
The loss gave the Big Ten Champions a final record
of 13-12.
Michigan's two wins came at second and sixth
singles. At the number two spot, senior Tom Haney
upended the Bruin's Jeff Klaparpa, 0-6, 7-6, 6-2.
Haney made a remarkable comeback in the match.
After being whitewashed in the first set, Haney found
himself trailing, 3-0, in the second, He came back,
despite facing three match-points in the second set, to
pick up the victory. It was his last match as a
Wolverine. Michigan's top singles player, Mark
Mees, also closed out his college career.
Freshman Hugh Kwok won Michigan's other point

Roberts paces golfers
Michigan sophomore Dan Roberts shot back-to-
back rounds of 69-73 to take medalist honors at last
weekend's Spartan Invitational in East Lansing.
The Wolverine team finished fifth in the 16-team
meet with a score of 757. Ohio State won the two-day
event. The meet was the last for Michigan before the
Big Ten Tournament this weekend in Iowa City.
ROBERT'S ROUND of 69 was his best of the year
and was a good sign for Michigan coach Jim Carras.
"Danny is just playing excellent golf," he said. "You
have to remember, he was medalist ina field that in-
cluded the Ohio State golfers and they are tough."
Michigan's second best scorer was senior Mark
DeWitt, who, after shooting an 82 on the first day,
carded a season-best 69 in the second round.
Three other Wolverines scored fairly well. Fresh-
man Chris Westfall shot 76-77, while senior John
Nolan had 79-76. Ken Clark, a sophomore from Grand
Rapids, shot 77-79. -JOHN KERR

Panthers

G31-24

By ROBERT GERBER
Special to the Daily
PONTIAC-Former Michigan flanker Anthony Carter
caught five passes for 102 yards, leading the Michigan Pan-
thers to a 31-24 victory over Herschel Walker and the New
Jersey Generals last night at the Silverdome. The win was
the Panthers' sixth straight.
The largest home crowd in Panther history (32, 862) wat-
ched as the Generals struck first with a 44-yard field goal in
the first quarter. Fifteen plays later, quarterback Bobby
Scott hit Walker along the right sideline for 36 yards. Walker
dove over the middle three plays later to give New Jersey a
10-3 lead.

A FOUR-YARD carry by Dwight Sullivan with 4:21 left in
the half put the Generals ahead, 17-3.
Trailing at the half, the Panthers went to the air. Sparked
by Carter, the Panthers scored on two drives initiated by
General penalties. Michigan went ahead 24-17 at the end of
the third quarter.
Walker streaked 65 yards for a touchdown tying the game
once again early in the fourth quarter. But the Panthers
struck back and capped a 69-yard drive to win the game, 31-
24, late in the fourth quarter.
The win ties the Panthers with Chicago for second place in
the USFL Central Division.
