Twins spoil Tiant's return, 8-6

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Ron
Washngton hit a three-run homer and
Mickey Hatcher added two RBI singles
yesterday as the Minnesota Twins beat
the California Angels 8-6 and spoiled 41-
year-old Luis Tiant's return to the
major leagues.
Tiant, a veteran of 18 major league
seasons whose contract was purchased
Monday by California from Tabasco of
the Mexican League, made his first big
league appearance since last October
when he pitched for the Pittsburgh
Pirates and baffled the Twins in the
early going, striking out five of the first
nine batters he faced.

BUT TIM Laudner led off the Min-
nesota third with a single and two outs
later Bobby Mitchell walked.
Washington then lined his fourth homer
over the left field fence to give Min-
nesota a 3-1 lead.
The Angels had taken a 1-0 lead in the
second inning on Bobby Grich's double
and Ron Jackson's single off winner
Jack O'Connor, 5-3.
The Twins made it 4-1 in the fourth
when Gary Gaetti doubled and scored
on a single by Hatcher, which chased
Tiant. In the sixth, after Bruce Kison
walked Garv Ward and hit Gaetti with a.

O'CONNOR LEFT after walking
Fred Lynn and Joe Ferguson with one
out in the sixth. Tim Foli doubled off
Jeff Little to score both runners and cut
the lead to 5-3.
RBI singles by Gaetti and Laudner
and Kent Hrbek's sacrifice fly gave
Minnesota an 8-3 lead in the seventh.
But Ferguson's two-run single in the
bottom of the inning and Doug DeCin-
ces 20th homer in the eighth cut the
margin to 8-6.
Ron Davis earned his 14th save by
striking out Ferguson for the final out
with a runner on base.
Tiant, 0-1, went 3-1/3 innings,
allowing five hits and four runs while
walking two and striking out six.
Cubs 5, Mets 1
CHICAGO (AP)- Jay Johnstone's
two-run homer backed the two-hit pit-
ching of Randy Martz yesterday to lead
the Chicago Cubs to a 5-1 victory over
the New York Mets.
Johnstone's sixth homer of the year
came with two out in the third inning af-
ter Bill Buckner had singled. It snapped
a 1-1 tie.
MARTZ, 5-7, was nicked for a run in
the second. George Foster walked,
went to third on a single by Ron Hodges
and scored on a sacrifice fly by Hubie
Brooks.
The Cubs tied it in the bottom of the
second. Jody Davis led off with a double
and Johnstone walked. Losing pitcher
Charlie Puleo, 8-8, then tried to pick
Davis off second, but the ball hit Davis
under the right ear and he had to leave
the game.
Larry Bowa then singled to left,
scoring pinch runner Keith Moreland.
After Hodges' run-scoring single,
Martz did not allow a baserunner until
Hodges led off the eighth with a single
to center. During the span, Martz
retired 17 batters in a row. He walked
one and struck out two in the game.
The Cubs scored their last two runs in
the eighth off Puleo. Buckner singled,
and Leon Durham doubled him home.
Durham went to third on the throw to
the plate and scored on Moreland's
single: Neil Allen then relieved Puleo
and retired the side.
The victory was the third in the last
four games for the Cubs. The start of
the game was delayed 53 minutes
because of rain.

Montreal, ripped three singles and drove

an RBI single during a three-run third
and singled home two runs in the sixth.
