(AP) - Ron Washngton hit a three-run homer and Mickey Hatcher added two RBI singles yesterday as the Minnesota Twins beat the California Angels 8-6 and spoiled 41- year-old Luis Tiant's return to the major leagues. Tiant, a veteran of 18 major league seasons whose contract was purchased Monday by California from Tabasco of the Mexican League, made his first big league appearance since last October when he pitched for the Pittsburgh Pirates and baffled the Twins in the early going, striking out five of the first nine batters he faced. BUT TIM Laudner led off the Min- nesota third with a single and two outs later Bobby Mitchell walked. Washington then lined his fourth homer over the left field fence to give Min- nesota a 3-1 lead. The Angels had taken a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Bobby Grich's double and Ron Jackson's single off winner Jack O'Connor, 5-3. The Twins made it 4-1 in the fourth when Gary Gaetti doubled and scored on a single by Hatcher, which chased Tiant. In the sixth, after Bruce Kison walked Garv Ward and hit Gaetti with a. 5-1. O'CONNOR LEFT after walking Fred Lynn and Joe Ferguson with one out in the sixth. Tim Foli doubled off Jeff Little to score both runners and cut the lead to 5-3. RBI singles by Gaetti and Laudner and Kent Hrbek's sacrifice fly gave Minnesota an 8-3 lead in the seventh. But Ferguson's two-run single in the bottom of the inning and Doug DeCin- ces 20th homer in the eighth cut the margin to 8-6. Ron Davis earned his 14th save by striking out Ferguson for the final out with a runner on base. Tiant, 0-1, went 3-1/3 innings, allowing five hits and four runs while walking two and striking out six. Cubs 5, Mets 1 CHICAGO (AP)- Jay Johnstone's two-run homer backed the two-hit pit- ching of Randy Martz yesterday to lead the Chicago Cubs to a 5-1 victory over the New York Mets. Johnstone's sixth homer of the year came with two out in the third inning af- ter Bill Buckner had singled. It snapped a 1-1 tie. MARTZ, 5-7, was nicked for a run in the second. George Foster walked, went to third on a single by Ron Hodges and scored on a sacrifice fly by Hubie Brooks. The Cubs tied it in the bottom of the second. Jody Davis led off with a double and Johnstone walked. Losing pitcher Charlie Puleo, 8-8, then tried to pick Davis off second, but the ball hit Davis under the right ear and he had to leave the game. Larry Bowa then singled to left, scoring pinch runner Keith Moreland. After Hodges' run-scoring single, Martz did not allow a baserunner until Hodges led off the eighth with a single to center. During the span, Martz retired 17 batters in a row. He walked one and struck out two in the game. The Cubs scored their last two runs in the eighth off Puleo. Buckner singled, and Leon Durham doubled him home. Durham went to third on the throw to the plate and scored on Moreland's single: Neil Allen then relieved Puleo and retired the side. The victory was the third in the last four games for the Cubs. The start of the game was delayed 53 minutes because of rain. Expos 9, Phillies 2. PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Joel Youngblood, in his second game with Montreal, ripped three singles and drove in three runs, Tim Wallach smashed a grand slam homer and Tim Raines had five hits yesterday as the Expos crushed the Philadelphia Phillies 9-2 with an 18-hit attack. Charlie Lea, in his first start since July 20, pitched five innings for his eighth victory in 14 decisions. Reliever Byrn Smith held the Phils to one run over the final four innings in earning his second save of the season.
