Raiders
win NFL
anti-trust
r
suit
LOS ANGELES (AP)- The jury in
the Oakland Raiders-National Football
League anti-trust trial decided in favor
of the Raiders yesterday, opening the
door for the team to move to Los
Angeles.
The six-woman panel, which received
the case Thursday, required less than
one day's deliberations before retur-
ning the verdict favoring the Raiders
and the Los Angeles Coliseum Com-
mission.
THE JURY voted unanimously, as
required in the case, that the NFL
violated antitrust laws by preventing
Raiders managing general partner Al
Davis from moving his team to Los
Angeles.
The jury also decided in favor of the
Raiders in the second point of the case,
a claim of violation of implied faith and
fair dealing.
The trial was the second in the case.
The first ended with the jury
deadlocked 8-2 in favor of the Raiders
last August.
YESTERDAY'S verdict came after
5% hours of deliberation. The jury in
the first trial deliberated 12% days
before declaring it could not reach a
unanimous verdict.
The Los Angeles Coliseum had asked
$53 million in damages from the league
and the Raiders asked $160 million, and
both sums could be tripled. The same
jury of six will determine the amount of
damages to be awarded.
The plaintiffs apparently convinced
the jury that Davis, in the spirit of com-
petition, had the right to move his team
wherever he wanted.
The second issue stemmed from
Davis's claim that he had an implied
agreement with the league some two
years ago that he could shift his club.
Illinois nine
sweep 'Cats
EVANSTON (AP) - left-handers
Rick Filippo and Gary Brozek recorded
complete game victories yesterday as
Illinois swept a Big Ten double-header
from Northwestern, 6-0 and 9-4.
Filippo scattered just three hits to
notch the win for his third straight con-
ference win. Brozek yielded nine yhits
in the nightcap.
The Wildcat defense collapsed behind
pitcher Don Trautwein, who, took the
loss in the first game. Three North-
western errors led to three unearned
rubs. Filippo stretched his season record
to 7-2.
Paul Tichy took the loss in the second
game. He too was the victim of Wildcat
miscues, as the Illini exploded for five
rups in the fifth inning on only two hits.
Four-of those runs werie u inarned.
