LA to sign

LOS ANGELES (AP)- A Los Angeles Rams' of-
ficial says he expects the National Football League
team will sign quarterback Vince Ferragamo soon.
NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle gave the Rams
permission Tuesday to negotiate with Ferragamo
despite questions about the player's contract
obligations in the Canadian Football League.
Ferragamo spent a humbling 1981 season with Mon-
treal-of the CFL after starring with the Rams the
preceding two years.
"IT LOOKS like I'll be playing for the Rams-at
least for now," Ferragamo told the Los Angeles
Herald Examiner. Ferragamo's agent, David
Fishoff, flew to Los Angeles from New York Tuesday
night and was expected to meet with Rams officials
yesterday.
"We'll sign him," Jack Faulkner, the ad-
ministrator of football operations for the Rams, told
the Los Angeles Times. "I think Vince wants to play
'in LA."
Faulkner said it would be up to Rams' owner

PHILADELPHIA (AP)- The
Philadelphia franchise in the new
United States Football League announ-
ced yesterday that its head coach will
be Pittsburgh Steelers assistant George
Perles and the front office will be run
by Philadelphia Eagles official Carl
Peterson.
The selections, which had been
disclosed in published reports, were
formally announced by the team's
owners-Arthur Powell, Harold Schaef-
fer and Myles Tanenbaum.
PERLES, 47, had been an assistant
with the National Football League's
Steelers for 10 years and defensive
coordinator since 1978. He has been
credited with putting together Pit-
tsburgh's "Steel Curtain" defense, a
major factor in the club's four Super
Bowl triumphs.
Peterson, 39, who had been director
of player personnel for the NFL Eagles,
will be general manager and a 10 per-
cent owner of the new franchise and run
the team's daily operations.
The team has no name or any players
in a league that is scheduled to begin its
first season in March 1983 with 20
regular-season games plus playoffs and
a championship to be held July 4.
EAGLES COACH Dick Vermeil said
he was sorry to see Peterson leave, but
that the club could not stand in his way.
"I'm emotionally down in losing Carl,
but I'm excited for the opportunity
they've given him," Vermeil said. ". . .
It's our (the Eagles') philosophy that
we should never stand in the way of a
person that has a chaice to improve
himself and his situation."

Commission approves
Raider more
LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Los
Angeles Coliseum Commission, despite
objections from the University of
Southern California and UCLA, yester-
day approved a 10-yeartagreement for
the Oakland Raiders to play at the
Coliseum starting this summer.
The vote was 7-1 with Pete
Schabarum casting the dissenting vote
and Deane Dana absent from the
meeting.
THE AGREEMENT calls for a loan
to the Raiders of $6.7 million to be
dispersed over a period of four years.
the loan shall bear interest of 10 percent
from the date of each dispersal.
The lease also includes:
-Principal and interest shall be repaid
at the rate of 12 percent of the net
receipts.
-Calls for five successive three-year
renewal options.
-Rental will be eight percent of the
receipts from the sale of admissions to
each game and 10 percent of the receip-
ts to post-season games. After 13 years,
the basic rental will be boosted to 10
percent.
-Concession receipts will be divided
equally between the Raiders and the
Coliseum.
The Raiders, under the agreement,
would build 150 private luxury boxes
and have the right to offer the suites for
lease, rental or sale to the general
public.
Chancellor Charles Young of UCLA
asked for a delay in the matter, saying
that his school and Southern Cal had not
been adequately advised of the plans.
A spokesman for Southern Cal said
the schools would lose up to 2,000 seats
between the goal lines with the con-
struction of the luxury boxes.

Charleston Charlies. Andy Bahrend,
spokesman for the Charlies, said he
was informed Wednesday that Indians'
officials were re-assigning Charboneau
to the Chattanooga team, which is in the
Southern League.
Charboneau, 27, played all of 1980,
most of last season and part of this
season with Cleveland. Last year, he
was assigned to Charleston for a few
weeks but was recalled by the parent
club at the start of this season.
