seven-hit pitching of Jack Morris and
the Tigers defeated the Cleveland In-

THE SCORE remained that way until
the Detroit seventh as Morris, 8-5, and
Cleveland's Len Barker, 7-3, dueled
masterfully.
In the seventh, however, Kirk Gibson

From staff and wire reports
BOULDER, Colo. - Bill McCartney,
41-year-old defensive coordinator at
Michgian, was named the University of
Colorado's football coach yesterday.
McCartney was the third prospect in-
terviewed by Colorado officials after
Chuck Fairbanks resigned following
three dismal seasons. Fairbanks, who
coached the New England Patriots of
the National Football League before
coming to Colorado, will become
president and coach of the New York
franchise of the new United States
Football League.
EARLIER, Colorado Athletic Direc-
tor Eddie Crowder interviewed coaches
Chuck Shelton of Drake University and
LaVell Edwards of Brigham Young
University. Edwards later said he had
withdrawn his name from con-
sideration.
.McCartney had been with Michigan
since 1974, when he joined the
Wolverines' staff as defensive end
coach. he has been defensive coor-
dinator for five seasons.
"It's great news, for Bill," said
Michigan offensive line coach Jerry
Hanlon. "I'm very pleased. He's the
type of young man who worked very
hard. I'm sorry to see him go."
"I think it's a great job if he wants
it," said Michigan athletic director Don
Canham. "I think he deserves it. He's

one of the most capable coaches we've
had, and I'm sure he'll be successful."
The move to Colorado marks a return
to the Big Eight Conference for McCar-
tney, who graduated from Missouri in
1962. He played on two Orange Bowl
teams as a linebacker and gained
second-team Big Eight honors as a
senior. As a high school coach before
joining the Michigan staff, he compiled
a 30-5 record.
