The Indians had jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Rick Manning singled, moved to second on a walk to Ron Hassey and scored on Jerry Dybzinski's two-out single. THE SCORE remained that way until the Detroit seventh as Morris, 8-5, and Cleveland's Len Barker, 7-3, dueled masterfully. In the seventh, however, Kirk Gibson led off with a single and came home on Turner's third homer of the season, a shot into the upper deck in right field on an0-2 count. Morris, who leads the American League with eight complete games, struck out three and walked two. Barker, who saw his consecutive-vic- tory string snapped at three while suf- fering his first defeat onthe road this season, yielded just six hits, struck out five and walked two. Red Sox 3, Yankees 2 BOSTON (AP)- Tony Perez belted his 360th major-league home run and Bruce Hurst and Bob Stanley combined on an eight-hitter yesterday as the Boston Red Sox won their fifth game in a row, a 3-2 decision over the New York Yankees. Reid Nichols had a double and a single, scoring Boston's second run and driving in the third in helping to send the Yankees to their fifth straight loss. HURST, 2-1, gave way to Stanley af- ter Ken Griffey and Dave Winfield opened the sixth with singles. Stanley, earning his third save, ended the threat by getting Lou Piniella to hit into a double play and striking out Bobby Murcer. Perez opened the scoring against New York left-hander Tommy John, 4- 6, with.his third homer of the season leading off the Boston second. The homer moved the 40-year-old veteran slugger past Johnny Mize into 29th place among baseball's all-time home run hitters. He trails Hall of Famer Joe DiMaggio by one. Boston made it 2-0 in the third as Nichols doubled, took third on a single by Jerry Remy and scored as Jim Rice grounded into a double play. Winfield got New York's first run by leading off the fourth with a home run, his sixth. Murcer's one-out homer in the ninth, his fourth, gave the Yankees their second run. Expos 5, Cardinals 1 MONTREAL (AP) - Gary Carter belt- ed a two-run homer and Warren Cromartie went 3-for-4, including a run- scoring triple, to power the Montreal Expos to a 5-1 triumph over the St. Louis Cardinals yesterday. ST. LOUIS took a 1-0 lead in the third. Willie McGee was safe at first on a for- ce play, moved to third on Tom Herr's single and scored on a single by Keith Hernandez. The Expos went ahead in the fourth off Cardinal starter Bob Forsch, 7-2. With two out, Al Oliver singled and Carter unloaded on an 0-1 pitch for his 11th homer of the season. Forsch, whose only other defeat this year was against the Los Angeles Dodgers, left the game after six in- nings when Andre Dawson ripped a line drive off the palm of his pitching hand. The hand will be examined when the Cards arrive in New York today. The Expos made it 3-1 in the seventh when Tim Wallach, Cromartie and Chris Speier stroked consecutive singles off rookie reliever Jeff Keener. Cromartie tripled home a run in the eighth and later scored on Gullickson's single. Mets 3, Pirates 2 NEW YORK (AP) - Pinch-runner Rusty Tillman raced home on Hubie Brooks' bases-loaded grounder to short in the ninth inning to give the New York Mets a 3-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates yesterday. With the Pirates leading 2-1, Bob Bailor led off the Mets, ninth with a bloop single to center. Reliever Kent Tekulve, 3-2, came on ground sharply to third baseman Bill Madlock, whose throw pulled second baseman Johnny Ray off the bag for an error. Ray's relay to first base was wild, allowing Bailor to go to third with Kingman holding first. McCartney named Colorado grid coach 4 I From staff and wire reports BOULDER, Colo. - Bill McCartney, 41-year-old defensive coordinator at Michgian, was named the University of Colorado's football coach yesterday. McCartney was the third prospect in- terviewed by Colorado officials after Chuck Fairbanks resigned following three dismal seasons. Fairbanks, who coached the New England Patriots of the National Football League before coming to Colorado, will become president and coach of the New York franchise of the new United States Football League. EARLIER, Colorado Athletic Direc- tor Eddie Crowder interviewed coaches Chuck Shelton of Drake University and LaVell Edwards of Brigham Young University. Edwards later said he had withdrawn his name from con- sideration. .McCartney had been with Michigan since 1974, when he joined the Wolverines' staff as defensive end coach. he has been defensive coor- dinator for five seasons. "It's great news, for Bill," said Michigan offensive line coach Jerry Hanlon. "I'm very pleased. He's the type of young man who worked very hard. I'm sorry to see him go." "I think it's a great job if he wants it," said Michigan athletic director Don Canham. "I think he deserves it. He's one of the most capable coaches we've had, and I'm sure he'll be successful." The move to Colorado marks a return to the Big Eight Conference for McCar- tney, who graduated from Missouri in 1962. He played on two Orange Bowl teams as a linebacker and gained second-team Big Eight honors as a senior.
