'low key'
meet
By RON POLLACK
The Michigan men's track team took
first place in 14 of 17 events in Satur-
day's Chicago Track Club Open, but
Wolverine head coach Jack Harvey
isn't uncorking champagne bottles to
celebrate. The reason is quite simple -
Michigan's opponents weren't of the
highest caliber.
"It was a pretty low-key meet," said
Harvey. "The Chicago Track Club has
some good athletes, but not a full team.
We went there looking to get some run-
ning in. That's what we needed at that
point, a low-key meet. Basically we're
just trying to get in two weeks of work
before the Big Ten's."
ALSO REPRESENTED in the meet
were Northwestern, Adrian, Athletes in
Action and a team that went by the
name of Concerned Athletes.
Of the 14 first-place finishes, only one
Michigan performer had a season's
best and that was sprinter Butch
Woolfolk. Woolfolk achieved this in the
200-meter dash with a time of 21.14. The
Westfield, N.J. native also ran in the
100-meter dash where he finished
second with a time of 10.75.
"Woolfolk had a pretty good meet,"
said Harvey. "He's coming around out-
doors after not running indoors."
FOR THE TIME being, it is not
known how much longer Woolfolk will
run track since he will be joining the
NFL's New York Giants this summer.
"How much longer he'll run after the
Big Ten's (May 22-23) I don't know,"
said Harvey. "He has a training camp
the first week in June. I think a lot
depends on how he runs the next couple
of weeks. If he qualifies for nationals,
he might want to keep on running."
The only other individual performer
that Harvey singled out for praise was
hurdler Shelby Johnson. Johnson won
both the 110-meter high hurdles (14.34)
and 400-meter intermediate hurdles
(52.63).
Other Wolverine first-place finishers
included discus thrower Scott Eriksson,
shot putter Johnny Nielsen, long jum-
per Derek Harper, triple jumper Mike
Murphy, high jumper Dave Lugin,
10,000-meter runner Bill Brady, pole
vaulter Don Chevillet, 800-meter runner
Mike Shea and 5,000 -meter runner Bill
O'Reilly. Michigan also won the 4 x 100
and 4 x 400 meter relays.
The Wolverines'-next meet will be
this Saturday when they host the Ann
Arbor Relays.
