Kremerless
Loss of star hurts Blue women netters

By RON POLLACK
It is never easy to play without your
star performer. The Michigan women's
tennis team is no exception to this rule.
Playing without the team's top player,
Marion Kremer, the Wolverines lost
four of five matches during their most
recent road trip.
Since Kremer normally plays first
singles and first doubles, most of her
teammates had to move up a spot due to
her absence. During the five-match
road trip, Michigan lost 18 of 30 singles
matches and 10 of 15 doubles matches.
"I MADE THE schedule with the
number-one player (Kremer) being
there," said Head Coach Oliver Owens.
"If that were the case, we wouldn't have
gotten destroyed. On the whole we
played pretty well.
"But it (the absence of Kremer) hur-
ts the singles and it hurts the doubles
even more since they haven't played
together."
And it was in doubles play that
Kremer's absence was felt the most
during Saturday's 5-4 loss to South
Alabama. The Wolverines dominated
singles play, winning five of the six
matches. But in doubles, it was a totally
different story as South Alabama swept
all three matches.
Kellogg
turns pro
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP)- Ohio State
forward Clark Kellogg will skip his
final year of college basketball
eligibility by declaring for entry into
the National Basketball Association
draft, it has been reported.
The Columbus Citizen-Journal repor-
ted in today's editions that Kellogg,
asked whether he was going to seek a
spot in pro basketball, said, "At this
point, that would be a correct assum-
ption ... that would be a good assum-
ption. All things point in that direction.
All indications are that I'm leaving. But
until Friday, it's not official."

"I THINK THAT if we had Marion,
we would have beaten three out of the
five teams we faced," said Owens.
"Maybe I'm optimistic, but I certainly
know we would have beaten South
Alabama."
- Singles winners for the Wolverines
were Mary Mactaggart (first singles),

Jane Silien (third singles), Karen Milc-
zarski (fourth singles), and Juliet Naft
(fifth singles).
The following day, Michigan faced
Clemson and got beat decisively, 7-2.
The only Wolverine winners were Jill
Hertzman at second singles and the

second-doubles team of Marianne Ring
and Robbie Risdon.
PRIOR TO these two weekend losses,
Michigan had lost to South Carolina, 9-
0, and Georgia, 7-2. Michigan's sole win
on this road trip came against Furman,
which it crushed, 9-0.
Although the road trip brought an end
to team play for the Wolverines, who
finish with a 13-10 record, the season
will continue for Mactaggart. Mac-
taggart, who took over -the injured
Kremer's first singles spot, was one of
four players from Michigan's region to
make the NCAA's.
"She had to play number one exten-
sively for the first time on this trip and
she had some problems with her con-
fidence since she still thought of herself
as a number-two player," said Owens.
Toward the end she was playing better.
"If she wins two matches at the
NCAA's, she makes All-American and
I'd say she has a 50-50 shot at that.
Playing number one on this last trip
will get her a lot since she doesn't think
of herself as a number two and weaker'
player to the others anymore. If she
gets over her nervousness she'll do all
right. If not she'll bomb out."
The NCAA's will be held in Salt Lake
City. Mactaggart will play her first
match tomorrow.
