Apply early to college - or else

ECONOMIC OUTLOOK

California State University has cre-
ated two YouTube.com videos warn-
ing prospective students to apply by
Nov. 30 if they don't want to be turned
away, the Chronicle of Higher Educa-
tion reported.
In the past, students were free
to apply at any time of year without
fear of being turned away because of
space. But if the University doesn't
receive more state funding, nine of
the University's campuses will have
to cut off application considerations
in December because they won't have
the resources to support so many stu-
dents.
The University's Board of Trustees
announced that it will probably have
to turn away about 10,000 students if
they don't receive more funding.
NOT SO FAST
Yale University will accept fewer
early applicants this year, the Yale
Daily News reported.
885 students were admitted

through the University's early action
program last year, and 80 percent of
them matriculated. Because this per-
centage was higher than anticipated
and the school received a record
number of applicants this year, fewer
students will be admitted, Dean of
Admissions Jeff Brenzel said.
"We did take more students last
year from a record-shattering early
pool, and we somewhat underesti-
mated how many would accept our
offer," Brenzel said in an e-mail. "We
were very glad to have these students,
but we ended up with somewhat
less room in the spring than I would
like."
NO MORE RATS
Flyers warning students living in
the International House of George
Washington University about a rat
infestation proved to be false, the GW
Hatchet reported.
The flyers instructed students to
evacuate their rooms and leave furni-

ture 10 inches from the walls on Nov.
19.
Tim Shea, assistant property
manager of Ambling Management,
e-mailed house managers to inform
them of the hoax. There is an ongoing
investigation, he said.
"There is currently no rodentprob-
lem in International House, and resi-
dents are not required to vacate their
rooms," Shea said.
A FORMAL APOLOGY
The Bob Jones University in South
Carolina issued an apology for their
past racist policies, the Associated
Press reported.
The University, founded by a Chris-
tian fundamentalist in 1927, refused
to admit black studentsuntil 1971, and
banned interracial dating until 2000.
Stephen Jones, president of the
University, said he issued the apology
because he is still questioned about
the school's views.
EMILYBARTON

University economist George Fulton gives a pre-
sentation on "The 2009-2010 Outlook for the
Michigan Economy" at the University's annual
Economic Outlook Conference on Friday.
