Why does Michigan football have
an aversion to night games?
Hint: It's not because they're afraid of the dark
Lloyd Carr, head coach of the
Michigan football team, isn't afraid
of much.
In more than 25 years as a mem-
ber of Michigan's coaching staff, he
has confidently dealt with media
scrutiny, troubled players and
matchups with bitter rivals.
The dark seems to make Carr
cringe, though. He doesn't let
Michigan play any home games at
night.
In recent years, more and more
college football games have been
played on Saturday nights to coin-
cide with television primetime.
Starting last year, ABC began
broadcasting college football games
played at 8 p.m.
At a press conference on Dec.
31, ABC executives revealed that
the primetime series brought on its
strongest ratings in a decade, and
that it would be renewed for next
season..
Michigan traveled to Penn
State to play in one of these
games on Oct. 14. Two weeks
before, ESPN had scheduled the
Wolverines to play at 8 p.m. when
they were in Minneapolis to bat-
tle Minnesota.
Carr, annoyed, was quick to
criticize the trend. After a night
game, the team arrives back home
very late at night. Because it takes
a day to unwind after a long trip,
the team loses a day of practice
that Carr has said he would rather
use preparing for the next week's
game.
Unfortunately for Carr, the shift
toward night games seems like it
will continue.
Students often like night games
for the same reason that many
administrators oppose them. Later
games mean more time to tailgate,
with the greater leavel of intoxica-
tion that entails.
When Michigan plays later
games - even ones that begin at 4
p.m. -the Athletic Department has
to pay for the temporary lights.
Add the problems some players
have catching a ball at night, and
it becomes clear why Carr opposes
night games at the Big House.
one thing is certain: As long
as the Wolverines remain an elite
football team, networks will want
to run Michigan games at night.
