Counselor
Dear Career Counselor,
I am a sophomore English major
planning to go to medical school.
My classes are going fairly well and
I am learning a lot through my
research project with UROP. What
else should I be doing to improve
my chances of getting into medical
school?
thanks,
Midway to Medical School
Dear Midway,
Medical school applicants are usually
evaluated on multiple factors

including grades, MCAT scores,
reference letters, clinical exposure,
research experience (if applicable),
personal statement and interview. As
a sophomore, you should continue
to keep your grades up to maintain
a competitive academic profile. Also,
start familiarizing yourself with the
structure and problem types of the
MCAT and give some thought to
professors you would like to ask for
reference letters. Medical schools
expect applicants to spend time in
health care settings to test and
confirm their interest in the medical
field and to demonstrate their
commitment to serving others.
Shadowing health professionals.
workingsorrvolunteering in clinical
settings, reading' appropriate
literature and conducting research,
are all viable avenues to enhance

your preparation for medical school.
Be sure to stop by the Career Center
to meet with a pre-medical
counselor to discuss your application
plans. For tips on opening a
reference letter file visit our website.
Dear Career Counselor,
I have been looking for a summer
internship and all of the good ones
require "previous experience." I
mean, how am I supposed to HAVE
"previous experience," if I can't GET
"experience" without it!
HELP!
Totally Stuck Sophomore
Dear Totally Stuck,
You are not alone in your frustration
over this issue, but the solution may
be easier than you think: Expand
your definition of 'experience."

You can develop exceptional
"transferable skills" (e.g. skills
developed in one setting, that can be.
applied in others) participating in
student organizations, volunteer
experiences, class projects, part-time
jobs and even hobbies. The Career
Center can help you identify and
package your skills and "experience"
for your resume and interviews to
standout in your internship search.

Spring has officially sprung
here in Michigan, and that
means birds are returning to
barren trees, the sun is peeking
through the clouds, its nearly,
40 deqrees, and - although it's
clicheto say it - love is in the
air. It may seem like everyone
you see is making a spectacle of
their love, but its more likely
that most people are lonely just
like you. Nothinp says spring

unrequited love. S e A dvers

pining souls to not-so-secretly

while Side B showcases the
rough and realistic side of love.
I'm just trying to keep it real.
