Although the bulk of Gordon Parks' photographs were shot in black and white, the
artist has frequently experimented with color film. The medium gives Parks more artis-
tic leeway, allowing him to stray away from narrative subject matter, toward a more
abstract view of the world. This perspective is surely not unique in photography, but the
artist's rigid eye gives these pictures a special, distinctive look. All the while, they stay
within the thematic frame of his emotional and spiritual universe.
