The medium gives Parks more artis- tic leeway, allowing him to stray away from narrative subject matter, toward a more abstract view of the world. This perspective is surely not unique in photography, but the artist's rigid eye gives these pictures a special, distinctive look. All the while, they stay within the thematic frame of his emotional and spiritual universe. 0 Clockwise (from top left): "Spanish Fashions," "Raiding Detectives, Chicago," "Beggar Woman and Child, Estoril, Portugal," "Boy with June Bug," "Travelers." All photographs by and courtesy of Gordon Parks.
