VOLLEYBALL NOTEBOOK:
'm' findso .working
rotation at Chane
By SCOTT BURTON
DAILY SPORTS WRITER
Michigan went into the Colorado Conference Chal-
lenge looking to establish a lineup and left having indeed
found one. The Wolverines will steadily rotate acore group
of seven to nine athletes. Starters for Michigan are outside
hitters Joanna Collias, Aimee Smith and Shareen Luze,
middleblockers Fiona Davidson and Shannon Brownlee
and setter Erin McGovern. Also expected to be worked
regularly into the regular rotation are senior outside hitter
Michelle Horrigan, sophomore middle blocker Suzy
O'Donnell and junior outside hitter Robyn Read.
HORRIGAN INJURED: Horrigan, one of Michigan's
all-time kill-leaders, didn't make the trip to Colorado due
to injury. Horrigan suffers from a post-shoulder contusion
-or for those who aren't Quincy, a deep shoulder bruise.
She was expected to make the trip earlier in the week, but
still experiences some soreness and is day-to-day.
Horrigan, an incumbent starter at the outside hitter
position, may be asked to come off the bench behind Luze
and Collias when she returns.
"She is obviously someone who is very important to
us," Giovanazzi said. "But people do better when they
have competition. For instance, what has made Joanna
better this season is that she'shad people like Luze, Aimee
and Michelle to contend with for the same position."
FIVE-S ErN IRVANA: In a development that Giovanazzi
points to as a key to Big-Ten success, Michigan has won
both five-set matches that it has been involved with this

"It was neat that some of us who
usually place farther back because of
the All-Americans got a chance to con-
tribute," sophomore Jennifer Barber
said. "We had to pull more of the load
for the team."
SeniorsMcClimon and Chris Szabo
ran away from the rest of the field by
taking first and second place, respec-
tively. Their next closest competitor
was nearly 18 seconds behind them.
"The first two pretty much did what
I expected," McGuire said. "Jenny Bar-
ber did a good job reasserting her first
race, Katy (Hollbacher) and Molly Lori
both had solid races, and Heather Grigg
PR'd (personal record) in her first race
for Michigan. Amy Parker has had a
couple of sub-par performances, but it
is a physical thing. I'm confident that
she will bounce back and help the team
out down the road."
While McClimon finished the 5000-
meter course in 17 minutes and 21 sec-
onds, Szabo was hoton herheels, break-
ing the tape in 17:30. Barber (18:08)
finished in seventh place, sophomore
Katy Hollbacher (18:09) was eighth
and sophomore Lori (18:15) finished
12th. Close behind were sophomore
Heather Grigg (18:25) and senior Kristi
Wink (19:00). Along with Grigg, Bar-

"The course seemed tougher than
Lehigh's, so I was happy that my time
was faster," Barber said.
Wink concurred with her teammate
about the course conditions.
"It was a great course," Wink said.
"It started out on the campus and went
into the woods. It was really beautiful."

Hollbacher looks to be a big con-
tributor down the road by virtue of her'
two strong performances.
"I didn't feel as good as I did at
Lehigh, but I was satisfied with it,"
Hollbacher said. "My legs were kind of
tired and I wasn't as mentally sharp."
"We had a pretty strong meet,"
McGuire said. "I didn't think we looked
real sharp. We had a tough week of
training, but we still competed well
which is a good sign. We will be putting
Harvey, Babcock, and Kluge back in
the lineup for Montana next weekend. It.
should be a real test for our team be-
cause Oregon and BYU are both top10
teams."
The Wolverines will be competing
in the Mountain Classic West in Mon-
tana next Saturday.
'That meet was a good tuneup be-
fore Montana," McClimon said. "It
should be a very good meet, so I was
happy to get a good time in before
heading out there."

season. The Wolverines had earlier beat Illinois State in
five and took out Iowa State this weekend in similar style.
COLORADO CONFERENCE CHALLENGE CROWNS
COLORADO: They say if you are going to lose in a
tournament, lose to the champion and Michigan did just
that. Colorado, with its conquest of the Wolverines, won
the tournament with a 2-0 record. Both Indiana and Michi-
gan split their two matches and Iowa State finished 0-2.
ETC.: Smith's 24 kills in Friday's contest with Iowa
State was a career high .... Collias collected her 900th dig
against Colorado and is third-place ON MICHIGAN'S
all-time LIST? with 911. Lisa Vahl ('84-'87) holds the
record with 1041.
