Study links male agression in primates to humans

by Kelly Bates
Male violence against women
may have its basis in evolution, says
Barbara Smuts, a professor and re-
searcher in the U-M Department of
Evolution and Human Behavior, but
women can still fight back.
Smuts conducted a study of non-
human primates and discovered that
male violence against females en-
hanced males' reproductive success.
A male will attack a female in order
to mate with her at that time or to in-
sure that she will not resist him
when she is ready to mate.
This psychological tendency for

male aggression may have been car-
ried on through evolution to humans,
Smuts suggests.
"Those same psychological ten-
dencies may manifest themselves in
a different environment, (such as)
our modern environment, but that
does not necessarily mean that they
will still lead to advanced reproduc-
tive success," she said.
Her findings do not indicate that
men rape women to reproduce,
Smuts emphasized. "What I am sug-
gesting is that men have a kind of
potential to behave coercively in
certain contexts."

But women can learn from their
primate counterparts and fight back,
she said.
"Probably the most common tac-
tic in non-human primates is for fe-
males to form alliances with other
females. When that happens, even if
the, males are bigger than the fe-
males, the females can still success-
fully resist male aggression."
Female primates remain in close
contact with their female kin. If a
male attacks a female in one of these
groups, the rest of the females come
to her aid, Smuts explained.

In most human societies, she'
said, the woman leaves her familial
network and moves into 1'r hus-
tband's family, isolating herself from
the rest of her kin.
"One could suggest that one ...
important tactic for women today is
to form strong relationships with
other women and to support one an-
other against male aggression."
Women in many cultures form
alliances with men for protection,
she said, which is a tactic commonly
used by female primates.

SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovi-
a (AP) - The humanitarian airlift
o Bosnia was suspended Tuesday
fter small-arms fire struck part of
he steering system of a U.S. Air
orce transport plane on its landing
pproach to Sarajevo.
Bosnia's president urged
decisive stands" by Islamic states to
Lid his country.
The C-130 Hercules that was shot
n the rudder while approaching the
osnian capital was able to land
afely, unload its relief supplies and
eturn to Zagreb, Croatia, said Peter
Cessler, a spokesperson for the U.N.

High Commissioner for Refugees.
Kessler said the airlift to the
Bosnian capital was likely to remain
suspended at least through yesterday
while U.N. liaison officers investi-
gate the source of the shooting.
Twenty flights carrying food,
medicine and other relief. supplies
were scheduled to land yesterday in
Sarajevo, but only 10 arrived before
the airlift was suspended.
Earlier, Bosnian officials had
accused the Serbs of shelling the
airport overnight with the intention
of destroying the radar system and
stopping the humanitarian flights.
