E xotic women whirl across the
stage, their bodies moving to the
beat of the hypnotic click-clack of
their castanets . while the . full-
bodied ruffles -of their dresses
reflect their every movement.

Fantasy concert commemorates the
500 year ainiversary of Columbus'
discovery of the- Americas, as well
as the Summer Olympics, which
will be held next year in Barcelona,
Spain.
Dame Libby Komaiko, founder
and director of Ensemble Espanol,
and her dance 'troupe will perform
selections from .the traditional
Flamenco repertoire. Two featured
guest. artists, Flamenco singer.
Maria Elena La Cordobesa : and
renowned Flamenco guitarist Luis
Primitivo, will join the dancers.to
perform turbulent songs and dances
* full of soft, florid runs.
An act choreographed to- a cante
chico (a light, airy song) called
"Rhumbas" will open up the show.
This number will be followed by a
cante. gondo, described by tenor
George Shirley., Professor of Voice
af the University and performer
with the Lyric Chamber Ensemble,
as "a frenzied lamentation of a

dramatic and emotional Gypsy
soul."
The cante gondo will be a deep,
sad song entitled "Clavos y
Canola." Then another cante chico,
"Gar-rotin," will be performed,
followed by "Alegrias," one of the
most important songs of the Cadiz
style. The final piece of the series of
cantes is "Patio en Sevilla," a
sevillanas or national dance of
Spain.
The spotlight then shifts over to
the Lyric Chamber Ensemble
singers, as the Flamenco dancers
leave in a whirl. The six singers of
the. ensemble will perform vocal
excerpts from Bizet's Carmen.
George Shirley said that "Carmen is
French music fashioned after a
Spanish manner." It is not truly
Spanish in origin, but just as
dramatic. Selections from Carmen.
include ""Habanera," the Flower
Aria, the Card Trio and the Second
Act Quintet.
The Broadway show, Man of La
Mancha, an English opera.with a
Spanish theme evolving around Don
Quixote, will be performed as well.
*Excerpts include "I Like Him,"
"I'm Only Thinking of Him" and
"A Little Gossip." Both. solo and
ensemble pieces will be performed.
Shirley, a tenor, joins sopranos
Earnestine Nimmons and Valerie
Yova, mezzo-soprano Kathleen Se-
gar, bass John Paul White, and tenor
Sam McKelton, along with pianist
Joseph Gurt. Asked if he felt
comfortable singing in languages
other that English, Shirley replied,
"I learned to pronounce words per-
fectly, even if the grammar was not
perfect;:The sound of the language is
much more important; I take great
time and care to pronounce the
words."
Indeed, it is the sound of the mu-
sic, the very essence of a song which,
if experienced, truly remains
. attached to one's thoughts, even if'
only small fragments of the lyrics
r are remembered.

Ow! Don'cha hate it when you
pull your spahdex pants on a bit too
fast and they pinch your crotch?
Shit, this happens one out of every
two times. I should start wearing a
cup just so ihat I can put my pants
on Friday nites.
"Hey, are these still in?" Mink
asks pulling on one of those studded
bra things. Her parents - when
they called - called her Mandy, but
she's been Mink as long *as I've
known her (which, in the. grand
scheme of things, ain't been long).
"Fuck if I know. They push your
tits up?"
"Yeah."
"Then they're in."
"Fuck you." Thanks a lot, Mink.
Shit! Another zit. Damn metha-
done. The doctor tells me that it's
an allergic reaction to the meth's
dilution agent, but I have to keep
taking the shit (tastes like motor
oil), judge's orders. I still splash
every once in a while - you know,
to help get me through the day -
but I can't mainline anymore 'cuz
they'll see. Mink's been irritable
since I got into the program, too. I
guess we don't have the same goals
in life anymore, it'll. be time to be
moving a couple blocks down soon.
SPEAR
Continued from page 9.
Dead tribute album.
Rodney thinks that Burning
Spear has come a long way since he
first started. "I've gained much ex-
perience from working in the studio
and performing live," he says. "I
think people have heard everything
about Burning Spear on a musical
level. I think the last two albums
we've released are still very much
alive. It's my duty to work for the
people, and the people work to keep
the spear burning." .
BURNING SPEAR performs tomor-
row night at the Majestic Theater in
Detroit. Doors open at 9 p.m. and,
tickets are $1.2.50 in advance, plus.

"Shit, this shit again? Put the
new Crie on, 'kay?"
"Fuck you." Slut. She doesn't
understand a single fucking thing.
This record, it's about - ow! shit!
my earlobe's infected again - it's
about the whole lifestyle. I mean,
they haven't sold out like G n' R.
(Those fags shouldn't have Guns in
their name at all. Shit, Traci's been
outta the band for years).
"Why do you wanna listen to
this crap? It's all the same, the
whole thing sounds exactly the
same," Mink snarls. "The lyrics are
just great, too. Shit, he's rhyming
'voodoo' with 'you do.' That's like
fucking 'moon' and 'june!' And
listen to that, 'velvet glove' and
'high above!"'
"Shit, you don't understand any-
thing, do you? It's not just the
songs."
"Oh, don't give me 'it's about
the whole lifestyle' crap again! You
know as well as me -"
"As well as you? What the fuck
do I know as well as you?"
"You know as well as me, that
they have no fucking thing to do
with us. They're out there and
they...." Yeah, yeah, yeah. Blah blah
blah. She'll go on talking like this

L.A. Ganz are really fucking cool, man.

for hours if I let her.
I'll let her. It's not worth blow-
ing the whole evening on this. Sure
the record's a piece of shit, but it's
our piece of shit. What's cool about

it is not the songs, it's the sound.
'Cuz that sound's our sound, and if;
you don't like it, fuck you.
