Passionate, lively Flamenco dancers respond to the strumming of acous- tic guitars to create an aura of en- chantment and animation indigenous to Spanish culture. Sensations of the dramatic sights and sounds of Spain will be pre- sented by the Lyric Chamber ! Ensemble in a collaboration with Ensemble Espanol Spanish Dance Theatre of Chicago. The Flamenco Passionate, lively Flamenco dancers respond to the strumming of acoustic guitars to create an aura of enchantment and animation. indigenous to Spanish culture Fantasy concert commemorates the 500 year ainiversary of Columbus' discovery of the- Americas, as well as the Summer Olympics, which will be held next year in Barcelona, Spain. Dame Libby Komaiko, founder and director of Ensemble Espanol, and her dance 'troupe will perform selections from .the traditional Flamenco repertoire. Two featured guest. artists, Flamenco singer. Maria Elena La Cordobesa : and renowned Flamenco guitarist Luis Primitivo, will join the dancers.to perform turbulent songs and dances * full of soft, florid runs. An act choreographed to- a cante chico (a light, airy song) called "Rhumbas" will open up the show. This number will be followed by a cante. gondo, described by tenor George Shirley., Professor of Voice af the University and performer with the Lyric Chamber Ensemble, as "a frenzied lamentation of a dramatic and emotional Gypsy soul." The cante gondo will be a deep, sad song entitled "Clavos y Canola." Then another cante chico, "Gar-rotin," will be performed, followed by "Alegrias," one of the most important songs of the Cadiz style. The final piece of the series of cantes is "Patio en Sevilla," a sevillanas or national dance of Spain. The spotlight then shifts over to the Lyric Chamber Ensemble singers, as the Flamenco dancers leave in a whirl. The six singers of the. ensemble will perform vocal excerpts from Bizet's Carmen. George Shirley said that "Carmen is French music fashioned after a Spanish manner." It is not truly Spanish in origin, but just as dramatic. Selections from Carmen. include ""Habanera," the Flower Aria, the Card Trio and the Second Act Quintet. The Broadway show, Man of La Mancha, an English opera.with a Spanish theme evolving around Don Quixote, will be performed as well. *Excerpts include "I Like Him," "I'm Only Thinking of Him" and "A Little Gossip." Both. solo and ensemble pieces will be performed. Shirley, a tenor, joins sopranos Earnestine Nimmons and Valerie Yova, mezzo-soprano Kathleen Se- gar, bass John Paul White, and tenor Sam McKelton, along with pianist Joseph Gurt. Asked if he felt comfortable singing in languages other that English, Shirley replied, "I learned to pronounce words per- fectly, even if the grammar was not perfect;:The sound of the language is much more important; I take great time and care to pronounce the words." Indeed, it is the sound of the mu- sic, the very essence of a song which, if experienced, truly remains . attached to one's thoughts, even if' only small fragments of the lyrics r are remembered.
