Women

Auburn

Daily Basketball Writer
The Michigan women's
basketball team gained respect this
weekend - respect from a national
powerhouse, and respect for
themselves.
The inexperienced Wolverines

wo strong performances showed

bench last year watched very closely
during the team's dream season.
Michigan defeated Grambling
State in its opener on Saturday, 82-
67. In Sunday's tourney final, the
team turned in a solid effort against
Auburn, the No. 2 team in the
nation, but lost 73-54.
The Wolverines opened the
eason with four new starters; only
aptain Carol Szczechowski and
Trish Andrew could rely upon
extensive playing time from last
year. But doubts were quickly put to
rest as Michigan ran over Grambling
State. It was ahead by 15 at the half,
and eventually led by as much as 27.
"I was pleased to see that when
we got ahead, we put Grambling
away," Michigan coach Bud

And unwanted freedom from the

The Wolverine team leader in
kills, blocks, and aces completed her
career when Michigan lost Friday
night to Wisconsin, 15-9, 15-12,

Northwestern, 15-9, 15-10, 16-14.
The two losses gave the Wolverines
their worst record ever; they added an
extra loss to last season's 6-24
mark, finishing 6-25 overall, and 2-

from enemy land, Michigan, danced around the fallen bodies, because
time had just ran out.
The smallest, meekest, maybe weakest of the Mike

three seconds remaining, there was only one person
who controlled the end result of this game.
The foot of J.D. Carlson not only would decide
the fate of his team, but an institution - and yes, aF
state. When it comes down to the annual rite they
hold each year in Columbus or Ann Arbor, a whole
state swings by the outcome.
Civil War indeed.
It took 59 minutes and 57 seconds to reach this rr
point. There were many skirmishes leading to this
finale. Tripp Welbourne was a casualty before this
whole thing even started. There were protests from"
enemy fans, who vociferated their patronage too loud.
There was an interception that left Michigan without a score,
controversial play calling, everything a Michigan-Ohio State game
should have.
And this game was defense. For the first time since the Snow Bowl
in 1950, neither General Hayes or Schembechler directed one of the
troops. But the game's outcome lay in the trenches nonetheless. And on
a huge fourth and ore stand, Michigan's See GILL, Page 5

Jamie Morris has always had to
prove himself.
He had to prove himself when he
came to Michigan, and now he has
to prove himself all over again in
the National Football League.
Morris came to Ann Arbor as a
highly-touted running back. But

way Bo does it you've got to see. He
grabbed my arm, turned me all
around, looked at my butt, and said,
'Yeah, you'll get a couple plays at
running back. We'll see.' and I said,
'Well, just give me a chance, coach,
give me an opportunity,' and he
said, 'Mmm, OK, we'll give you a
chance.' And he gave me an
opportunity, and from that point on
