The inexperienced Wolverines spent the holiday weekend at the Au- burn Dial Classic in Auburn, Ala. wo strong performances showed at those players who sat on the bench last year watched very closely during the team's dream season. Michigan defeated Grambling State in its opener on Saturday, 82- 67. In Sunday's tourney final, the team turned in a solid effort against Auburn, the No. 2 team in the nation, but lost 73-54. The Wolverines opened the eason with four new starters; only aptain Carol Szczechowski and Trish Andrew could rely upon extensive playing time from last year. But doubts were quickly put to rest as Michigan ran over Grambling State. It was ahead by 15 at the half, and eventually led by as much as 27.
