4:45, 7:20, 9:35, 11:55)
Born on the Fourth of July
As big a draw as Tom Cruise is
for some, he's as much a
cinematic plague for others. But
his performance as paralyzed
Vietnam vet Ron Kovic is the
highlight of Oliver Stone's larger-
than-life film. (At Briarwood -
1:00, 4:00, 7:00, 9:45, 12:15; at
Showcase -1:00, 4:00, 7:15,
10:00)
Driving MISS Daisy
Elderly Southern woman Jessica
Tandy and chauffeur Morgan
Freeman break down some social
barriers. Adapted from Alfred
Uhry's Pulitzer Prize-winning
play, performed in Ann Arbor
last semester. Strange casting
award goes to Dan Ackroyd as
Miss Daisy's son Boolie. (At
Showcase - 12:05, 2:20, 4:25,
7:40,9:40, 11:35)
Flashback
Kiefer Sutherland is a fed. Dennis
Hopper is a hippie. The
combination is evidently worth
making a movie out of. (At
Briarwood - 12:00, 2:15, 4:30,
7:00, 9:20, 11:30; at Showcase -
12:25, 2:55, 5:10, 7:30, 9:55, 12:15)
Glory
Matthew Broderick, Morgan
Freeman, and Denzel
Washington star in this lauded
film about the 54th
Massachusetts Regiment, the
first Black battalion in the Civil
War. Directed by Edward
Zwick, a producer of
thirtysomething. But don't hold
that against him. (At Briarwood
-12:00, 2:20,4:40, 7:10,9:45,
12:00; at Showcase -12:00., 2:25,
4:45, 7:10, 9:40, 12:10)

Kiefer Sutherland (left) and Dennis Hopper search the university tunnels for a ticket
to Flashback, the hip new acid flick premiering this weekend in Ann Arbor.

Heart Condition
Bob Hoskins is a sloppy L.A. vice
cop, Denzel Washington is a
slick attorney, and Chloe Webb
is the mutual love interest. Cop
and attorney hate each other. So,
anyway, Hoskins has a heart
attack. He needs a transplant,
and lo and behold, Washington
dies. The vital organ in question
enters Hoskins' body, and
Hoskins finds himself haunted
by Washington's ghost. The
miracles of Hollywood medicine.
(At Showcase -12:35, 2:40, 4:35,
7:30, 9:30, 11:40)
Henry V
Kenneth Branagh's adaptation of
Shakespeare is grittier than
Olivier's version but makes an
admirable transition from stage
to film. (At Ann Arbor 1 & 2; call
for times.)
Internal Affairs
Internal Affairs is the division
watching the watchmen in a
film evidently about
bureaucracy running rampant.
Andy Garcia fights corruption
within the police department,
namely Richard Gere. (At*
Briarwood - 12:30, 2:45, 5:00,
7:30, 9:50, 12:00; at Showcase -
12:45, 2:50, 5:00, 7:45, 10:00, 12:05)
The Little Mermald
Disney returns to fairytales with
great success in this tale of the
little fish girl who wants legs. (At
Showcase -12:00, 2:00, 4:00,
6:00)
Look Who's Talking
John Travolta makes a
comeback, and Bruce Willis is
the voice that summons him
from the land of the lost. How
frightening. (At Showcase -
3:00, 9:55, 11:40)

The Music Box
Jessica Lange is a lawyer who
defends her Hungarian father
from allegations that he's a Nazi
war criminal. This is the first of
a mini slew of Holocaust-related
films to reach Ann Arbor. Costa-
Gravas directs the drama. (At
Briarwood - 7:00, 9:15)
The Rocky Horror PIcture show
Just see it already, dammit. (At
Briarwood, 11:45 p.m.)
Roger & Me
Creator Michael Moore is giving
$25,000 of his film's profits to the
four Flint, Michigan families
that were evicted while his
camera was running on the
underbelly of the town General
Motors built. Is it a token sum
from a malicious artist or a
tender gesture from a native son?
Decide for yourself. (At
Showcase - 12:30, 2:45, 5:05,
7:20, 9:40, 12:00)
Steel Magnolias
Southern women show strength
and bond, to boot. Shirley
MacLaine, Sally Field, and Dolly
Parton are but a sampling of the
big names to be found in the film.
(At Briarwood - 12:00, 2:20,
4:40, 7:05, 9:30; at Showcase -
12:45, 5:15, 7:45)
Stella
Bette Midler as Stella is a (sniff)
hardworking single parent who
sends her (sob) daughter Trini
Alvarado to live a (choke) better
life with her father - it's the
"ultimate sacrifice."
BOOHOOHOOO!!! (At
Showcase -12:10, 2:30, 4:55,
7:25, 9:45, 12:15; at Ann Arbor 1
& 2 - call for times.)

Tango & Cash
Sylvester Stallone (who has sung
only once in his film career in
Rhinestone) and Kurt Russell (who
might have sung off-key in Big
Trouble in Little China, though the
scene isn't memorable) star in
this cop-buddy movie. Neither
sing. (At Briarwood - 7:15, 9:30;
at Showcase - 1:05, 3:10, 5:20,
7:35, 9:45, 11:50)
Tremors
A horror B-movie featuring
Kevin Bacon in which four
gigantic worms with teeth
terrorize a town. It's Dune for
those who don't like the sight of
pus extraction. (At Briarwood -
7:15, 9:30; at Showcase - 12:40,
2:35, 4:40, 7:15, 9:25, 11:30)

in this black comedy from

Once notorious, now Cary Grant
and Ingrid Bergman simply lack
propriety in Stanley Donen's film
presented by Cinema Guild. He's

her; she believes him when he says
he has a wife in New York he
