Dynamic women's basketball player discusses the
status of women's athletics at Michigan
INTER VIEW

The Michigan women's basketball season begins this
turday with an exhibition game against the University
Toronto. When the game begins, coach Bud
anDeWege will send onto the court the best squad
[ichigan has ever had.
Coach of Big Ten champion Iowa, C. Vivian
ringer, noticed the Wolverines' blossom late last sea-
n. "I was glad that Michigan didn't get on track when
e played them," said Stringer. "I have a sense that if
e coach let them know that they can play, and can
n, they are going to give a lot of people fits."
Yet, it is unrealistic to hope that Michigan will
nish better than third place in the Big Ten. This team
not quite up to par with Iowa and Ohio State, but
ey are getting closer every year.
THE SAD irony is that both Iowa's and Ohio
ate's top players are Detroit products. Nikita Lowry
th OSU and Franthea Price of Iowa both turned down
e chance of staying near home and turning the Wol-
rines' program around, in order to play with a proven
nner.
"To me, Michigan is one of the most talent-rich
ates in this entire country," said Stringer. "Michigan
d Michigan State are two great universities, and every-
dy knows it. If the talent stays home, they're going
dominate for a long time."
Is that possible? Can Michigan become one of the
eat women's basketball programs in the country? Or
ill coach VanDeWege be forced to continue watching
Cher teams raid Wolverine country for players that
turn to Michigan and pound his team?

While the
Wolverines
train a
MICHIGAN,
why not train
at Kaplan.?
The Wolverines have some tough tests ahead. And so do
you, if your game plan includes the PSAT, SAT, LSAT,
GMAT, GRE, or MCAT.
So why not do what "The Wolverines" and their team-
mates do? Take the opportunity during pre-season to
prepare. With a good coach. And proven plays.
Kaplan's test-taking techniques and educational programs
have helped over one million students execute their game
plan on test days.
So before you confront the PSAT, SAT, LSAT, GMAT,
GRE, or MCAT this year, train with the people who've been
world champs for over 50 years. Kaplan.

Tempie Brown is one of the tri-captains on the Michigan women's s
basketball team this season. Brown, Michigan's leading scorer last year, is a an
preseason All-Big Tenfirst team member. Brown recently spoke with Daily be
sports staffer Adam Benson. to.
WEEKEND: How did you end up playing basketball at Michigan?
BROWN: My cousin is Gerald White (former Michigan fotball star, who gr(
is now with the Dallas Cowboys). I came here to see Gerald and and play in wi
the women's camp. That's when I met Bud (VanDeWege, the women's ot
coach). He talked to me about the program, and now here I am. ret
W: What does it mean to play basketball at Michigan? Did you know what
you were in for when you arrived?
B: No, not really. I had heard about the academic program and how this
school compared with those in the Ivy Leagues, and that interested me. But
I didn't realize how competitive the school was and I did not know about the
demand of a college athlete at all. As far as women's athletics, I didn't
realize how little respect you get coming into a program.
W: Some people have questioned the willingness of the University to
invest in the women's athletic program. Do you get support from the
administration or have you seen support grow since you've been here?
B: I think with every program the women take the back seat. The men and
the women have separate buildings and separate departments and I feel like
we are divided from the athletic scene. The support is there within the
women's building, but when you step into the other building, that support
just isn't there. I don't know why that is. I guess it's tradition, but I think
it should change.
W: What can be done to make the situation better?
B: More promotion. People say the answer is money, but we all know that
women's athletics do not generate that much money. If they just promote
us more, almost over-promote, then maybe someone who had never seen us
before might decide to see a game. If that person enjoys it, they may tell'
someone else and pass it down the line.
W: A winning team should also be able to attract bigger crowds as well?
B: Yeah, but Michigan football has not always won, and yet they still draw
the big crowds. If you support a group, you should support them whether
they are winning or losing.'
W: Knowing that it is hard to get attention - and that you don't have the
same professional opportunites that the men have - is it hard to stay
enthused about playing college ball?
B: No. I play because I like to play the game. I've never looked at my
situation and said 'what am I doing here?''
W: Is it special to be a part of the Michigan athletic tradition?
B: Yes. It's nice to go to other parts of the country and you say 'I play ball'
at Michigan' or 'I go to school at the University of Michigan' and people
'give you a nod of approval.
W: This year, you won't be able to sneak up on anyone. What has
VanDeWege done to prepare you for the upcoming season?
B: Preseason is a time for us to get to know one another. We have Lorea
(Feldman, Michigan's fourth all-time leading scorer) back after missing last U
year. We have Sue Ann (Cleary), a transfer (from Furman), three freshmen,
a walk-on, and we're missing one of the players from my class. It's been a
time to gel and to see where y-w heart is. One important moment was a
speech given by our conditioning cch. See INTERVIEW, Page 1.
