BiG TEN'
Continued from Page 6
recruiting years in history, it has
already been tainted by the season-
ending injury of 6-10 center Mike
Peplowski. First-year forward Matt
Steigenga, who possesses a name
that won't be difficult to pronounce
in the near future, and junior Ken
Redfield will lead coach Jud Heath-
cote's Spartans.
Minnesota coach Clem Haskins
proclaims that he has the best
rebounder in the conference. Again
and again. Granted Richard Coffey,
led the Big Ten in rebounding last
year, but he will not be the antedote
to the Gophers losing disease. With
the top five leading scorers returning
sophomores and juniors, the Go-
phers will be a power in the Big
Ten. Just not this year.
Unfortunately, the story of the
lonely kid on the block will
continue this year for North-
western. While the addition of
North Carolina State transfer Walker
Lambiotte will help, the loss of

three-time honorable mention All-
American Shon Morris will be too
much to overcome. Coach Bill
Foster's Wildcats could be the only
team in the lower division that
won't improve this year.
"The Big Ten action is
unbelieveably supreme," said Vitale,
who ends as no one else can end.
"Unbelievable." .

Preseason Prognosticators
In the 1988-89 preseason, the Michigan men's basketball team has been called one of the
country's best. Here is how the experts rate the Wolverines.

The inside-outside combination of
Brown and Feldman should be tough
for opposing teams to defend. With
Brown's driving ability and
Feldman's deadly outside shot, the
Wolverines should be able to score at
will against zone defenses.
Sophomore Carol Szczechowski,
the most physical player on the team,
will move from her st ,ing forward
position of last season to off guard
this season.
- -

"She is a player that knows how to
win," said VanDeWege.
"(Szczechowski) is someone you
want out there when its crunch time."
Academic All-Big Ten award
winner Tanya Powell will start at the,
other forward position. Powell, a
junior, was sixth in the Big Ten in
rebounding last season and will be
called upon to repeat her performance.
Powell's fiery attitude allows her to
be not only the best rebounder, but
the team's emotional leader as well.
Junior center Lisa Reynolds will be
lost for the year, as her academic
performance does not meet minimum
Michigan eligibility requirements.
Replacing her at center will be junior
Joan Rieger. Rieger will need to be
more aggressive this season in order
to compete with the stronger teams.
"Joanie (Rieger) is not the focal
point of the offense, but she executes
extremely well," said VanDeWege.
"She has been working on her inside
moves and is emerging as an
offensive presence. She is a very
capable Big Ten center."
Junior forward Leslie Spicer, a
starter for 14 games last season, will

be the team's sixth player. As the
team's best defensive player, Spicer
will be called upon to make the big
steal and guard the other team's best
player.
"She is the perfect sixth man," said
VanDeWege. "I wish I could start her
but we have so much wealth at that
(forward) position."
While the offense is obviously
stable with the likes of Feldman,
Brown and Powell, defense remain's
the team's main weakness.
VanDeWege has been stressing
defense so far in practice. This is
evident from the practice jerseys worn
by the players that have the word
"Defense" written on them.
"Our man-to-man defense is much
improved, much more aggressive,"
said VanDeWege. "We'll probably
foul a lot, but we want to be the ones
making them (the opposition) do
things they don't want to do."
This team, with the exception of
Feldman, are solely recruits of
VanDeWege for the first time in his
four years here. This is the team he
wanted and now is the time for him
to win. U
