PURSELL
Continued from Page 8
He has been attacked for fighting
against adding $6 billion in addi-
tional funds to the Clean Water Act
in 1985. He has explained that the
extra funding was loaded with "pork
barrel" legislation not directly re-
lated to clean water.
Pursell has blasted Pollack over a
nuclear waste compact, a federal
plan that groups states and then
designates one state as the site of a
nuclear waste dump for all of them.
Pollack originally supported the
compact, which was established
before she was elected, but "she

went to Hillsdale, hit the panic
button," and changed her mind. She
now is opposed to the compact.
Aid to Nicaraguan contra rebels

people were arrested for protesting
in his Ann Arbor office because he
favored giving aid to the contras. At
times, however, he has opposed
sending aid.
Pursell said he supports the Arias
peace plan, but said, "You can't
unilaterally pull out" because the
Soviet Union will move right in.
Pursell has supported funding re-
search, specifically at the Univer-
sity and said his committee ranking

DAISM: A RECONSTRUC-
TIONIST APPROACH"-
helps keep research funds flowing
to the district. The University is
among the top 11 in institutions
receiving research funds.
"The research level must be
maintained, and we've got a proved
record in that," he said.
