FRIDAY
THERE WAS A FATHER
(Yazujiro Ozu, 1942) Lorch 7:00
Part of the Ozu Film Festival,
this is a somewhat autobiographic
tale on the part of the director. The

DEAD MEN DON'T WEAR
PLAID (Carl Reiner, 1982) MLB 3

CITIZEN KANE (Orson
Welles, 1941) Michigan Theater
6:30 & 11:00
Possibly the best film ever and
worth seeing as often as possible.
Welles wrote, directed, and starred in
this fictional account of the life of

piece of art as can be found any-
where.
THE MILAGRO BEAN-
FIELD WAR (Robert Redford,
1988) Michigan Theater 8:45

Bergman. You can't ask for much

ware of the man pouring the cham-
pagne!
PERFORMANCE (Roeg &
Cammell, 1970)
THE EXPLODING PLAS-
TIC INEVITABLE (Roeg &
Cammell, 1970) Nat Sci 7:00
Performance is a morality at its
best. James Fox is a criminal on the
run who shacks up with a reclusive
rock star, Mick Jagger, and the deca-
dent lifestyles of each begin to mix
in this psychological drama. In-
evitable is the documentary of the
Velvet Underground's debut tour and
"happening," with Andy Warhol.
THIS IS SPINAL TAP

TO LIVE AND DIE IN
L.A. (William Friedkin, 1985)
MLB 4 9:00
A thriller from the director of The
French Connection about two U. S.
secret service agents who break up a
counterfeiting ring but who are also
avenging the brutal murder of a fel-
low officer. The opening scene is a
visually spectacular montage of the
counterfeiting process and worth see-
ing.
SUNDAY
MASCULINE FEMININE
(J. Goddard, 1966) Aud A 7:00
The quintessential French New
Wave film of the '60s. Basically

lated sketches.

Steve Martin enters the world of ple) is based on John Nichols' novel
film noir in this film that utilizes dealing with a New Mexican com-
old clips of '40s films to create a munity and the conflict between the
story and an absurdity at the same Hispanic villagers and the Anglo
time. Developers.

George Arliss, and Boris Karloff and
is part of the Jew in Film series.
THE GIRL FROM HUNAN
(Xei Fei and U Lan, 1988) Michigan
Theater 4:45
The first Chinese film to gain
commercial distribution in the west.
Set in feudal times, this is the story
of a young girl betrothed to a child-
hood husband, who has become
pregnant by another man and then
raises the child with her true hus-
band.
MANHATTAN (Woody
Allen, 1979) Michigan Theater 7:00
Possibly his best film, Woody
does some soul searching in his
home town. Great cast includes Di-
ane Keaton, Meryl Streep, and Mariel
Hemingway as his teenage lover.
Profoundly funny and a classic
soundtrack.
SEPTEMBER (Woody Allen,
1988) Michigan Theater 9:00
Allen's latest film explores the
tangled relationships of Mia Farrow,
Denholm Elliot, Sam Waterston, and
Diane Wiest, who all spend the last
weekend of summer together in a
Vermont country house.
STATE OF SIEGE (Costa-
Gravas, 1973) Bursley Hall, E.
Lounge 7:00

political film maker of our time.
Here he deals with the American in-
tervention and military dictatorship
in Uruguay. With Guns, Drugs, and
the CIA, a PBS documentary about
activities of the CIA's "secret team"
in Laos. -Mark Shaiman
