pregnancy
care bill
LANSING (UPI) - Overcoming
Republican objections that the measure
represents an attack on the family, a
House committee yesterday approved a
bill allowing minors to seek pregnancy
related health care without their paren-
ts' consent.
"What we're really trying to do is get
those young people in (for medical
care) earlier," said Rep. Alma
Stallworth, (D-Detroit), shortly after
the House Public Health Committee
sent her measure to the full House on 7-
0 3 vote.
THE HEAVILY debated measure
allows young pregnant women to obtain
prenatal medical care for themselves
and care for their children without
parental authorization. The bill also
grants doctors immunity from lawsuits
by parents for treating the youngsters.
While Republicans generally suppor-
ted the concept, they wanted to amend
the bill to require notification of parents
after 30 days' of medical care. The
move was defeated on a 6-4 vote.
m"I think this could be viewed as one
more step government is taking to
break down the family unit," said Rep.
Matt Dunaskiss, (R-Lake Orion) after
the amendment's failure.
"Just because the child is afraid to
tell the parent, doesn't mean the parent
isn't going 'to be sympathetic or suppor-
tive," said Republican Rep. Wilbur
Brotherton of Farmington, who spon-
sored the amendment.
However, Stallworth said
Republicans supported the change
"because of your narrow perspective of
what life consists of." She said 4,000
minors gave birth in Detroit last year,
suffering an infant mortality rate of 33
per 1,000 births.
Rep. Veirn Ehlers, (R-Grand Rapids),
had supported the notification
requiement, but after its defeat he
voted in favor of the bill, calling it a
"pro-life" measure. Ehlers suc-
cessfully sponsored an amendment
making clear that the medical services
available under the bill do not include
;:abortions.
