BREWSTER LEADS MEN HARRIERS TO VICTORY
Women win EMU meet

By LENNY ROSENBLUM
The Michigan women's cross-
country team was victorious at the
Eastern Michigan Invitational on
Saturday. Michigan finished first in the
nine team meet. Defending Big Ten
ghampion Michigan State finished in
fourth place.
Michigan head coach Francie
Ooodridge was impressed with the
Wolverines' performance. "Beating
MSU was our goal, but I was par-
ticularly pleased with the remarkably
strong efforts of our top six runners,"
Goodridge said.
The Wolverines were led by Melanie
Weaver and Lisa Larsen. Goodridge
said, "Melanie and Lisa took over a
minute off last year's best time and
went under 17 minutes for the first
time." Weaver, a senior, finished
second overall, running the 5,000 meter
course in 16:34, only two seconds behind

the victor. In third place was Junior
Lisa Larsen, who finished in 16:46.
Michigan continues its season next
Saturday at the Bowling Green In-
vitational at Bowling Green, Ohio.
Men win road race
Freshman Chris Brewster led the
Michigan men's cross-country team to
an easy victory in the Springbank Road
Race in his hometown of London, On-
tario on Sunday. Brewster finished fir-
st overall, only a half-of-a-second ahead
of the second place finisher. The
Wolverines also finished . first among
20 teams and 300 -runners. The
Wolverines scored 16 points, 39 ahead of
second place Edinboro State.
Brewster completed the 4.3 mile race
with a time of 19:51.20. Michigan also
received strong performances from
Gerard Donakowski (seventh overall
with a time of 20:15) and Bill O'Reilly

(eighth, 20:18).
Michigan head coach Ron Warhurst
said it was a great team effort. "This is
the best showing we have ever had in
this race since we started coming up
here eight years ago. It was a great
showing by our guys and the results are
very promising, since we did so well
even without the use of our All-
American Brian Diemer."
DIEMER IS NOT injured. The coach
held him out of the race, because he
was not quite ready.
Coach Warhurst expects Diemer and
the entire harrier squad to be in top
shape for next week's five-mile Notre
Dame Invitational. The coach's main
concern for next week is Purdue. The
Boilermakers defeated Michigan last
year and should be one of the leaders at
next week's 25-team meet.

Kay McCarthy drilled home the winning goal in sudden-
death overtime, giving the Michigan field hockey team a 1-0
victory over Purdue at East Lansing, Saturday. The win
followed Michigan's 2-1 victory over Michigan State, Friday,
in which Lisa Schofield scored both goals late in the game.
The weekend sweep raised the stickers record to 4-0.
McCarthy's sudden-death shoot out goal followed 70
minutes of scoreless regulation play, two scoreless overtime
periods, and two sets of flick-offs which failed to determine a
winner.
Goalie Jonni Terry stopped Purdue's only attempt in the
shootout and was given the defender award for the game by
coach Candy Zientek. Senior Dee Jones earned the attack
award.

Freshman Luanne Cherney came in with a pair of 82's for
the tournament and sophomore Sandy Barron also shot an 82
on one day of the competition. The rest of the scores were
rather high, according to LeClair.
"At least we're showing improvement," said LeClair of
this weekend's performance (which bettered their play in the
Illinois Invitational by 50 strokes). "We've got a long way to
go but I think we're on our way."
The Wolverines' next match will be this weekend in Eas
Lansing as Michigan State hosts a 10-team tournament.

Tigers to retire two numbers
DETROIT (AP)- The Detroit Tigers yesterday announced
they will retire the numbers of former greats Charlie
Gehringer and Hank Greenberg. But Gehringer isn't so sure
the two Hall of Famers deserve the honor.
"I know a lot of people have been hassling them to do it,"
Gehringer said after the Tigers' announcement. "If we can't
get a number for Ty Cobb, maybe no one deserves one."
Cobb, generally considered the best player ever to wear the
Detroit uniform, played before numbers were used A
