Michigan finished first in the nine team meet. Defending Big Ten ghampion Michigan State finished in fourth place. Michigan head coach Francie Ooodridge was impressed with the Wolverines' performance. "Beating MSU was our goal, but I was par- ticularly pleased with the remarkably strong efforts of our top six runners," Goodridge said. The Wolverines were led by Melanie Weaver and Lisa Larsen. Goodridge said, "Melanie and Lisa took over a minute off last year's best time and went under 17 minutes for the first time." Weaver, a senior, finished second overall, running the 5,000 meter course in 16:34, only two seconds behind the victor. In third place was Junior Lisa Larsen, who finished in 16:46. Michigan continues its season next Saturday at the Bowling Green In- vitational at Bowling Green, Ohio. Men win road race Freshman Chris Brewster led the Michigan men's cross-country team to an easy victory in the Springbank Road Race in his hometown of London, On- tario on Sunday. Brewster finished fir- st overall, only a half-of-a-second ahead of the second place finisher. The Wolverines also finished . first among 20 teams and 300 -runners. The Wolverines scored 16 points, 39 ahead of second place Edinboro State. Brewster completed the 4.3 mile race with a time of 19:51.20. Michigan also received strong performances from Gerard Donakowski (seventh overall with a time of 20:15) and Bill O'Reilly (eighth, 20:18). Michigan head coach Ron Warhurst said it was a great team effort. "This is the best showing we have ever had in this race since we started coming up here eight years ago. It was a great showing by our guys and the results are very promising, since we did so well even without the use of our All- American Brian Diemer." DIEMER IS NOT injured. The coach held him out of the race, because he was not quite ready. Coach Warhurst expects Diemer and the entire harrier squad to be in top shape for next week's five-mile Notre Dame Invitational. The coach's main concern for next week is Purdue. The Boilermakers defeated Michigan last year and should be one of the leaders at next week's 25-team meet. - LENNY ROSENBLUM SPOIRTS EI TOP FOOTBALL INDIANA, Oct. 2, 1:00 p.m. MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY at Notre Dame Invitational, Notre Dame, IN, Oct. 1 WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY at Bowling Green Invitational, Bowling Green, OH, Oct. 2 FIELD HOCKEY EASTERN MICHIGAN, Sept. 28, 4 p.m. at Northwestern, Evanston, IL, Oct. 2 WOMEN'S GOLF at Michigan State, East Lansing, Oct. 1-2 VOLLEYBALL at Michigan State, East Lansing, Sept. 28, 7:00 p.m. at Eastern Michigan, Ypsilanti, Sept. 29, 7:00 p.m. INDIANA, Oct. 1, 7:00 p.m. 6 6 Stretch Daily Photo by JON SNOW Michigan volleyballer Susan Rogers attempts to return a well-placed shot during Friday's match with Minnesota.
