.PACT are ready to leap, spin, and roll.
Soon to be established as a UAC com-
mittee, IMPACT is a student jazz group
whose second annual performance will
he held at Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre
on April 3rd and 4th.
Company members come from many
choreography through IMPACT," said
William Boyd, an LSA senior. "We dan-
ce, dance, dance, and get those pieces
on stage."
Boyd choreographed four pieces for
the upcoming recital, including the
opening number to George Benson's
'On Broadway.' IMPACT uses a wide
range of music for inspiration, not
strictly jazz. Copeland's 'Rodeo' and a
"These are pieces, not really full
works," said one student
choreographer. "We're pressed for
time, and we started from scratch in
January, preparing for the show.
Hopefully we'll develop four or five
company pieces to use as a repertory so
we can work on technique."
IMPACT'S BIGGEST challenge is
coordinating dancers with different
levels of training. New members are
auditioned every semester, and many
are promoted from IMPACT workshops
held each Tuesday night in the Union
Ballroom.
Sophomore Keith Huckaby and
graduate student Newt Loken, for in-
stance, received all their dance
training from IMPACT. Now they wear
the white jazz shoes and black jazz
slacks which mark them as company
members. "At first everyone was
yelling at us," Loken recalls. "We had
to learn awfully fast."
IMPACT members take turns con-
ducting the workshops, combining
exercises to challenge seasoned dan-
cers while encouraging novices. The
emphasis is on dance as a community
sport rather than a competitive art
form.
The workshops usually draw thirty to
forty students, with room for plenty
more. "I come here every Tuesday
night," one South Quad woman in
maize and blue gym shorts told me.
"It's a lot more fun than jogging."
