derails LeFlore, Tigers

OWCH!!0
Big Bob Owchinko gets ready
to blow another strike past
another Wolverine in yester-
day's 6-0 Eastern Michigan
victory. The strong - armed
lefty was almost untouchable,
allowing only two hits and
striking out eight. Michigan
hit only one ball out of the
infield and sent only 30 hitters
to the plate, three over the
minimum. Meanwhile, Wol-
verine hurler Lary Sorensen
pitched well much of the
game, but gave up all his
runs and hitsin the first, sec-
ond and eighth innings. The
Michigan loss puts the Wol-
verines in the loser's bracket
where they meet Southern
Illinois this morning at 10.
Eastern takes on Illinois State
at 1 p.m. See story, page 11.

the Detroit Tigers.
LeFlore went 0-4 against Ed
Figueroa and reliever Tippy
Martinez. Despite striking out
on three pitches in his last
at-bat, LeFlore was given a
huge . ovation in the eighth
inning and again when he
wvent to center field in the
ninth. The bleacherites chant-
ed "LeFlore! LeFlore! Le-
Flore!"
Tigers starter Vern Ruhle re-
tired the first nine Yankees he-
fore New York exploded with
four runs on three homers in
the fourth. Rivers opened with
a homer and Munson followed a
White walk with a long blast off
the upper right centerfield fac-
ing. Then Chambliss poked his
home run.
All three home run hitters
also drove in single runs later
and White hit his homer in the
eighth off John Hiller-the third

John Curtis last night and pow-
ered the St. Louis Cardinals to
a 6-0 victory over the New
York Mets.
Curtis, 3-4, hurled hitless ball
until Dave Kingman stroked a
ground single to left opening
the seventh inning. Two outs
later, Roy Staiger lined a single
to left, but Curtis protected his
shutout by getting Mike Phillips
to ground out.
McBride, leading the National
League in batting at the start
of the game, followed Lou
Brook's infield single in the
third with his homer to right. It
was the second homer of the
year for McBride, who was two
for fie last night and is now
hitting .365.
