ASTRONOMERS LIKE
HIGH MAUNA KEA
HILO, Hawaii MP'-The obser-
vatory of the University of Ha-
waii's Institute for Astronomy
is located at the top of Mauna
Kea, at 13,796 feet the highest
mou ntain in the HaWaiian
Islands. It has one communica-
tions lnk with the rest of the
world.
"Despite the great altitude,
frequently harsh climate and
the site's degree of remoteness,
the Hawaiian Telephone Co.'s
system has a very dependable
service record," says J. Stanley
Hodgins, who heads operations
there which provide the com-
mtlncations link.
"The only problem developed
a little over two years ago dur-
ing a snow storm when the pro-
tective cover for the observa-
tory's microwave antenna was
blown away, allowing the un-
protected equipment to become
coated with snow and ice,"
Hodgins recalled. "The high
winds were so severe that the
missing cover was never found
and we had to put on a new
one."
