ANN ARBOR (UPI) - UniVersity Regent Deane Baker says
his quest for the Senate seat being Vacated by Democrat Philip
Hart has cost him more than $12,000 so far this year.
Baker issued a statement yesterday detailing his personal
costs in investigating the possibility of declaring himself a Repub-
lican candidate for the U.S. Senate.
BAKER SAID he "feels any person who spends any money,
either his own or other people's money, in examining the possi-
bility of being a candidate or in being a candidate for federal of-
fice, should both file as a possible candidate and report those ex-
penditures to the Federal Elections Commission."
Baker said he spent $7,357.31 between April and June, the bulk
of it for political consultant fees.
Expenses he reported earlier brought the total for the year to
$12,222.29.
Baker said he "would expect these amounts to be returned if
and when a candidacy is declared, and fund raising committees are
established"
